Alright, settle in for the battle of the bulge and the clash of the flash! Picture iconic men cast as radio-kernel combos doing battle wearing awkward hair and spandex while wielding power tools... it's on!

Okay, maybe that's just the beer talking through a [straight] guy without a TV. So here is the topic for real:

ZVD is dated but stable as a rock in a storm on this device. There are a dozen posts detailing the random failures/risks of moving to ZVH. In fact, true and total success with ZVH seems to be about 92% of your stuff working as expected.

What I want to do with this thread is lay out the pros and cons of each radio-kernel set now that we've had some time to play with each. Put simply, this is a choice that it needs to be seriously considered, not a simple dilemma of whether to upgrade based on familiarity vs. novelty.

Here's where I see us at this point:

ZVH:
Pros:
  • Additional configuration options from Gingerbread
  • Longer longterm support from app devs
  • Active and primary focus of AC devs for Sprint-based ROMs
  • Additional features come bundled in ROMs (Flash, Dark Tremors mod, etc, IQ Agent disabled)
  • Looks cooler at stock base.
  • Possible battery life gain.
  • Some audio tweak options added.
Cons:
  • Your mic will not work if you plug something into the headphone jack.
  • Your device may not charge...
  • Your device may not have a working screen...
  • Your device may not notify you properly...
  • You may throw your device into a mall fountain in frustration.

ZVD:
Pros:
  • Last stable and fully functional radio-kernel release for this device.
  • Everything just works.
  • CM7 port focus/availability still on this set.
  • Mature and stable Sprint-based ROMs available and some maintained
Cons:
  • Cool hacks and tweaks require manual implementation
  • Less longterm support from app and ROM devs

Please reply with your input. I'd really just like to lay this out there plainly and honestly so newcomers and regulars can make their own choices using the outline.

I really want to play with the stuff in Your Mom, but I need my gadget to work for work. We're all hoping for a fix from LG/Sprint, but who knows.

My phone is very stable and very fast, I can over clock to 864mhz with no reboots. My phone has everything working. Running the kravens cm7 with ihov3.3 kernel. Why fix anything by updating when nothing is broken?

And that is whats stopping me from "upgrading"

I feel like if I am going to give up some things (e.g. my super cheap in-car conference phone), I ought to get some freaking cool stuff in trade. thekraven is really making it tempting to switch to his CM7.. Visual Voice Mail was the other thing that I would really miss, but he's got that working now from what I've read. And all in a 65M ROM? I'd have some more things to tweak with again, too. Maybe I'll do a nandroid now, it's just good practice...

Yes, definitely try TheKraven's CM7

VVM works just fine - I get a text alert + the notification but thats a bonus to me.

Sometimes I don't get the VVM alert right away because of signal but the text alert comes through and notifies me.

Battery life is as good or better than the Froyo Roms

And every month or 2, you can nandroid backup your current rom, flash the stock VD Gingerbreaked back on, and update Profile/PRL
Then go ahead and revert back to your current nandroid backup.

Has anyone tried using VVM in CM7 with GO SMS Pro? I usually remove the stock MMS.apk to avoid interference.

Also, is the e-mail client fully deodexed? I need to hook into an exchange account without the device admin/lock code crap.

Running that nandroid now. Why, oh why, do I tamper with things that already work...?
