What stops a company like HTC from putting out their own "vanilla Android" phone? I know that they want to focus on their brand, and part of that brand is Sense, but there seems to be a lot of interest in the Galaxy Nexus. With this increased interest in a pure google experience, I would think that HTC could put out its own clean phone.

I don't think the interest in a pure Google phone is as widespread as you may think. The truth is that pure Android isn't as visually pleasing and as easy to use as some of the Android devices with custom UIs on them. Plus, the custom UI adds functionality to the operating system. I owned a Nexus S 4G and I liked the device, but I found myself frustrated because there were some features that were missing in the stock Android experience. I found myself going to the Android market looking for widget replacements or apps that provides the same functionality that came with Sense or TouchWiz. True, you will get updates faster and will probably see less bugs if you were stock, but I think that the general consumer is less concerned about software updates. They seem to be more concerned with user experience.

Agreed. But with a pure google phone you see less lag. I use ADW because I'm tired of sense. It lags and I get the white and green HTC screen when hitting home. (That annoys the crap out of me) I like the look of ICS and use themes for ADW but, with the launcher and the theme it takes up memory on my phone slows it down... I was thinking of getting the nexus s 4g because it will be getting updated to ICS as where the EVO 4g won't.:(

Took the words right out of my mouth. Now grant you Android at it's base isn't the prettiest of OSs, but it is the most functional imho. The one thing I'll never understand is why didn't Google throw in predictive type when your punching in the phone number of one of your contacts.
