I don't think the interest in a pure Google phone is as widespread as you may think. The truth is that pure Android isn't as visually pleasing and as easy to use as some of the Android devices with custom UIs on them. Plus, the custom UI adds functionality to the operating system. I owned a Nexus S 4G and I liked the device, but I found myself frustrated because there were some features that were missing in the stock Android experience. I found myself going to the Android market looking for widget replacements or apps that provides the same functionality that came with Sense or TouchWiz. True, you will get updates faster and will probably see less bugs if you were stock, but I think that the general consumer is less concerned about software updates. They seem to be more concerned with user experience.
