Various Issues with Shield: Looking for Tips & Tricks

Hi Everyone,

Though I've been a member for sometime, I've never submitted a message. So hear goes. I recently purchased the Shield Tablet, primarily for the specs that just screamed - bitchin. :-) Anywho, coming from the iPad (Thank God!), I find the Shield Tablet somewhat of a pain in the a** sometimes just because of what seems like random bugs. At first I updated immediately to L 5.0 but ugh - that was a nightmare and I went back to 4.4. Then when 5.0.1 came out I moved to that and it certainly "helped". My biggest issues that still exist and thus are annoying as heck are as follows:

- Tablet often freezes up. Nothing makes it respond other than a forced hard restart.
- Tablet often doesn't turn on after it's been asleep for awhile. Repeated button push does nothing. But pressing it a few times and then waiting 30 seconds and then voila! It comes on with another power button push.
- Tablet lags - especially when using Chrome. I did the 512 trick and it helped a little, but I ended up going over to FireFox where I don't seem to have this issue.

So what I'm looking for is if you all know of any bad applications out there that I should avoid? Any other settings changes that can get me past these annoyances? I know that I'm an early adopter and I'm fine with that, but thought it wouldn't hurt to turn to the pros - you all - to find out as much as I can. Thank you!

Well, I probably can't help you out too much since I am a very new Shield tablet owner myself. But I can say that I have also experienced some random freezes. As far as lag in Chrome, I can't say that I have seen anything that could be described as consistent lag. I have however had a few cases where Chrome appeared to freeze complete. Then after about 20 seconds, it comes back and behaves normally.

I think I am just chalking all of this up to immature software running on brand new hardware. Specifically, Android lollipop running on tegra k1 based hardware. Hopefully we will continue to see updates from nvidia that will stabilize this product.

Quick question for you: How is your wifi experience on the tablet? Do you connect on a 2.4 or 5 GHz channel?

I don't know about him, but I connect on 5ghz and have had zero wifi issues in my two months or so of ownership.

To OP: The only one of your issues I've experienced is the Chrome lag. And yeah, it's annoying.

Cygnus I connect to 2.4. And sometimes the Wi-Fi looses the entire connection. It usually comes back after about a minute.

I've experienced same issues on my shield, but I wiped data after 5.0.1 and now it is entirely new tablet, way faster.
Also check what is your "processor mode", you probably want to max it out.

I have certainly experienced all of these issues you have described. I tried a factory reset and it didn't seem to do much good. Uninstalling Facebook helped quite a bit (I read some issues with this in other forums - probably a compatibility issue with the new ART (Android Run Time) used in Lollipop.) I also went in the Power Control Apps section and selected "Optimize All". What seemed to help me considerably was unmounting and removing my SD card. There are some compatibility issues with Lollipop apparently... Nothing has helped the Chrome issue much, although it has gotten a little better after switching to Chrome Beta.

I guess the good news is that, according to Nvidia's posts on their forums, they are working on an additional OTA update that they plan to push out in the next couple of weeks. Hopefully, that will quash some bugs!
