So I've been eyeing a new phone but the problem is that I have payments on my LG G4 until August of 2017. I have $495 remaining.
What I did was I bought an iPhone 6 plus August of 2015 then sold it on eBay for $500 in February of 2016. Then I bought a brand new opened box G4 on Swappa for $300. Not a bad deal.
I took a chance with this phone because of the possibility of it developing the dreaded Bootloop issue. It was manufactured in 10/2015 so I have a later model that will hopefully be ok. But of course there are no guarantees that it won't. Hence the reason I've been looking for ways to get a different phone without having to pay anything extra.
So, Verizon is offering a $300 credit for my phone if I trade it in and get a Samsung device. It doesn't include the Note 7 yet. I'm guessing they're just trying to sell more S7's and Note 5's because they know once the Note 7 is available, not just for preorder, the other ones aren't going to sell as well.
Well, you can see that I will end up paying an additional $200 to upgrade to pay off my current phone. I've obviously already spent the $200 I made when I sold my 6 plus.
I've also been looking at switching over to T-Mobile and doing the uncarrier thing. They will pay off my device and I can get a new phone through them. The issue is that I will end up paying more with my wife staying with Verizon on a single line plan and myself on a single line plan on T-Mobile. With less data. We would have to both drop down to the 2gb plans.
There are also other ways for me to switch phones but one of these two options seems to be easier than having to sell my phone and then buy another one. The resale value on my G4 sucks. So I'd either have to pay more for a comparable phone or go with an older device.
I keep hoping and praying that my G4 won't be affected by the Bootloop issue, but I can't help but think about it almost every day.
