Any way to get this device from another source and use it with my Verizon Note 4?

I really like it, but Verizon's awful contract price isn't really any better than their awful off contract price.

The $400 is up front though, right? Or is that the $5 a month?

Verizon will let you put up to 450 in accessories on your bill is 400 for the gear off contact 350 on contract and 5 a month for the service and I have a shared data plan so data is just added in

With any CDMA carrier, it's either their way or highway. You have no say on it.
With GSM carrier, we have the SIM card. There are many different ways we can use the watch, either use the phone SIM card, buy a prepaid SIM or signup with another GSM carrier and use their SIM card. Or don't use any SIM card hence don't pay for any plans.

I was in the same boat. I didn't want to pay the $400 and I also have unlimited so I couldn't add a line. I just went to AT&T and bought their watch for $299. It works perfectly connected to my Verizon Note 4 through Bluetooth and at home using WIFI.
Here's my thread they were taking about.

What functionality did you lose when you opted to go with the Bluetooth and Wifi option? In my head, I am only foreseeing the loss of using it as a standalone device meaning I could leave the phone at home and walk around with the watch only. I assume when texts and calls come through on the Note 4 they come through on the gear S as well.

verizon price matched the att $299 price for me....i had already purchased at full price, took iit back with the att webpage on my note 3 and they didn't even quibble much about doing it.
