1. Open your Contact app (not within Phone app) and find the setting that allows you to 'Export' your contacts to either internal or SD card (menus vary by manufacturer)
2. Open the Verizon Cloud app and select the top left 3 lines menu, select Settings, What to Back Up, and uncheck contacts (and anything else you don't want backed up, like music to save space for more precious things like pictures...I put all my music into Google Play Music for free storage...you can also turn off pictures/video and use Google Photos to back you up with a much larger amount of free storage)
3. Delete your contacts on the phone, again using Contact app (your contacts are safe from step 1). Go back to Cloud app, from its home screen scroll to bottom to select the circle that says Contacts. When your contact's are displayed, select the 3 dots at top right to select contacts. 0 selected appears at top left, select the drop down menu arrow and select all. Select 3 dots again and choose delete. 4 Go back to the contact app, find the Import contacts and import your contacts into your Gmail. I use and enter my contacts into Gmail. Of course, you must never forget your Gmail account/password if you begin using Gmail anything (Google Photos, Google drive) to back up your content!
