Verizon Early Edge trick/scam

I just pre-ordered the GS6 and got Verizon Edge. I didn't know that I had to turn in my old Moto X. It does have some cracks on the sides of the phone. Everything else is fine. I think the Verizon sales rep said if they don't accept the trade in, I get charged for the GS6 full price. But if that happens do I go back to my old plan? And what are the odds they DON'T take my old Moto X? Also, can I cancel this order and keep my old plan? Thanks.
You generally have 14 days to backout. You will be charged a restocking fee. So you were under contract and went into the early edge program? You are required to turn in the phone. As long as the screen is not cracked you are good to go. Do you have any older smartphones? You might be able to activate one of them and turn it in instead.

Once you've paid the phone off, it IS yours. If you do the early upgrade you DO have to return it.

How can they make you return the phone if it's paid off in full? Sounds stupid.

no other phones. I hope they accept the old phone. tiny cracks on sides, with little damage on edge. no screen damage at all. Anyone else trade in a similar device?

It is Verizon, anything to make a buck. He is currently under contract for the old phone they are letting him go into the Edge program before that contract is up. To do this they require a phone to be turned in.

I do wonder if you go into the early edge program are you still under the original contract?

When I trade in my old phone, will I have better success at a VZW store or by sending it to the warehouse? I don't want it to be rejected.

I believe you will have to mail it in either way. You should be fine as long as the screen is not cracked. I wouldn't worry about this.

I figured as much. I mean Verizon gained a new EDGE customer. Why would they ruin that. Thanks all.

Yes, you are still under the old contract date. But it isn't extended.

When you are in edge you are not in "contract". You can leave at any time just have to pay the balance of the phone.

This isn't strictly true when you do an Early Edge upgrade. Your original contract date remains unchanged, which means that should you want to move back to the subsidized model, you have to wait until you hit that initial upgrade eligibility date (and have the Edge phone fully paid off). For instance, I upgraded under a subsidized plan in 2/13. Then I Early Edged in 5/14. If I wanted to go back to a subsidized plan, I would not be eligible for the discounted phone rate until 2/15 (and then only if I paid off the remaining balance of the Edge device). There is no ETF as such (you just have to pay off the device balance to leave), but it does impact the timing of getting a new subsidized plan.

What plan are you on? Did you have to turn in the phone to early edge? So when you early edge you could leave without paying the ETF, you just need to pay the balance of the phone?

More everything 15gb with 3 lines. I don't know the exact details about how the etf works with the early edge, as I have no plans of leaving Verizon. Yes, I had to turn in the most recent smartphone which was activated on my line

Nice and sneaky of Verizon to hide that "must return your current phone" thing right at the very end, before I'm about to hit "place my order." Never a single mention of it before that.

I've got an S4, my contract is up on 5/18, I want to move to Edge and pre-order the S6 edge. I also have a useless Motorola Droid sitting around collecting dust. Am I correct to assume I couldn't activate that phone, then place the order, and give them the Droid? I'd have no problem doing that, but I'm not giving them my S4 just to get the phone at release rather than a month later.

You should be able to do that. I would definitely activate it before you place your order.

Do you get the $25 discount by being on Edge?

You should be able to do that. I would definitely activate it before you place your order.

That's interesting. There seems to be some conflicting reports regarding this (that it can still be done, and that Verizon closed the "loophole" back in October.) I wonder, if it did happen to work, if I would be able to re-activate my S4 while waiting for the S6 to release, or if I'd just need to keep that Droid on my account in fear of messing things up.

The loophole they closed was using a basic line to get an upgrade and then dropping data. You used to be able to add a line for $9.99 (was almost $15 with taxes) and get a smartphone. You now have to keep the $30 data package on the line for 2 years.

I am not sure how they track it. I would definitely make sure the old phone is on the line at the time of order and when the New phone is activated. I don't know about in between.

What plan are you currently on?

I'm on a More Everything Loyalty Plan with 6GB of data. Initially, I was avoiding Edge because they were only giving me a $15 discount on line of service (since I was technically only paying for 3GB of service), but that, for some reason, recently changed. My account is showing the full $25 a month discount when I move to Edge, making it of definite value to me, especially with Verizon's crazy $349.99 contract price on the S6 Edge (even if there is a $50 rebate.)

What you might want to do is activate the Droid, then open a chat conversation where you are explicit that the phone you'd be returning is the Droid. If they ok that I'd think you'd be good as you'd have evidence. Then I'd definitely keep the Droid activated until you activate the S6. No need to chance things for a few days.

Otherwise just keep the S4 and upgrade in May. It's not that long, and for some models it shows shipping isn't till may 1 anyway.
