Verizon Early Edge trick/scam

Nice and sneaky of Verizon to hide that "must return your current phone" thing right at the very end, before I'm about to hit "place my order." Never a single mention of it before that.

I've got an S4, my contract is up on 5/18, I want to move to Edge and pre-order the S6 edge. I also have a useless Motorola Droid sitting around collecting dust. Am I correct to assume I couldn't activate that phone, then place the order, and give them the Droid? I'd have no problem doing that, but I'm not giving them my S4 just to get the phone at release rather than a month later.
Fyi, Verizon will give you $100 minimum smartphone trade in, including the Droid, when buying the s6/e. Verizon will give you $150 trade in for the s4.

I was under the impression that is only for new activations. It isn't entirely clear if someone edging up would get that, or if someone paying down an edge contract and opening up a new one would get that either.

You do not have to turn your phone in if you pay it off. For instance I am edging up for an s6 and currently have a droid turbo. Customer service allowed me to pay it off in full. I get to keep the phone and now I can get the s6. The only time you have to turn in your phone is if you pay 75% of the device and not completely paid off then you have to turn it in.

To the OP, its a lease unless you pay it off fully. If you don't pay it off fully then you must return the device, that is how the carriers offset selling the device over time, they refurbish it and resell it.

We're still (5-mo left) under a 2-yr contract. I went online to do the early edge to get 3 new phones. During completing the process, it notified me to ONLY return the smartphone (on the primary#) ... nothing on the other 2 smartphones ! Does it mean I can keep them ???? I've called customer-service
and they stated all 3 should be returned but not sure why the website didnot mention. (the new phones are still on the way ... the package should contain the envelope(s) to return old phones ... will see how many envelope(s)).

If it glitched and didn't charge you I would return them.

Edge completely confused me, from the beginning. I opened a 2 year contract in December. I was told I didn't qualify for Edge, until after I paid 6 monhs on time, then I would be eligible for Edge. Ok. Paid 6 months on time, called inquiring about Edge, only to be told now that I have to pay a 50% down payment, which was never mentioned before!! No where along the line was that ever mentioned! If I have bad credit ok, my faukt, but I had mentioned a lot to customer service agents all along the way that I wanted to do the Edge thing, and it was never mentioned to me that I would now need a down payment. So disgusted now.

Bad credit = higher down payment or no edge

I was told I would qualify after 6 months of payments (on time) and I did that. Throughout that period, I called in several times to discuss Edge, and I one ever mentioned any down payment or anything. I am approved for 10 lines of service, without a deposit on 2 year cobtracts, but not for Edge? Not real consistent.

Unfortunately Verizon csr is a hit or miss. Their policies are a bit weird sometimes. You can push the issue since you were promised that you can do edge after 6 months.

That's annoying. To be fair they can't run your credit until you are actually ready to sign, so anything they told you up to that point wouldn't have held.

First off it seem pretty clear that no one reads the fine print. And yes, to do a early edge you have to turn in your device (although a few stores will let you keep it depending on how long you have been a customer). If you are up for a upgrade, your device is yours. You own it. The edge is not a scam. It is a great program that lets you get the phone you want for a affordable amount. With the edge verizon gives you a $15-$25 credit every month depending on your data package. As for the CSR, Verizon departments get so over flooded and outsources the overflow to smaller contract companies that don't really have a working knowledge, but just some book with half baked answers. If you need help, go to your local corporate store. They will have the answers that you are looking for. As always, make sure to read the fine print. If it sound like some line out of a bad sales movie the rep is feeding you. Ask for another rep to explain. Typically if you get two people telling you the same thing, it is more than likely legit. Verizon don't not take well to the reps lying to customers and really cracks down on things of that nature. Good Hunting

No you do not have to turn in your device. You have 2 options to do a early edge,

1: pay 70% of the device and hand the device over

Or

2: pay 100% of the device (you keep your device) then wait 30 more days then edge up to new device. I have done the option 2 twice since December 2014. And I've only been a customer since Dec 2014 so no that has nothing to do with how long you've been a customer.

It's changed now. Edger requires 100% payoff before you can do another edge agreement.

That's for new Edge agreements taken out since last month. Someone looking to upgrade now is likely still on an older agreement with the 75%, or perhaps 50% pay down requirement.
