Verizon Galaxy S3: Can't download an MMS message, don't know what to do.

I had a friend send me an "MMS message" yesterday, and according to the phone, it is "30KB". There is a white download button, and every time I press it, I get this blue and white bar and the word "downloading" but nothing happens. I have tried to download this message over a dozen times, in various locations, even holding the phone a few inches from my wi-fi router, and still haven't been able to download it. I have no clue what to do. Any ideas?

I have no clue what to do. Any ideas?

Sure:
1) forget (erase) this particular message (file?) because it probably is/was corrupt(ed).
2) ask your friend to resend it.
3) MMS has nothing to do with the internet, so holding the phone near your WiFi router doesn't serve any purpose. MMS uses mobile networks exclusively, even when you're connected to the internet/WiFi. So MMS eats into the sender's monthly dataplan (expensive). MMS messages can only accommodate very limited size files (= lo-res).
4) Have your friend use another file transfer protocol, like IM (= 'Instant Messaging'; free Telegram recommended; which you will need to have installed too), or
5) have him send you – via email, SMS, or IM – a public link to that file from a personal cloud like free Dropbox or MEGA where he has uploaded that file to so that you can download it.

And there are still more ways to skin a cat.

I have the exact same problem! Same scenario. It happens over and over again with my Samsung Galaxy S3, but it does it randomly. Sometimes I get an MMS, and sometimes I don't. Yesterday, I received one--no problem! Then later in the day I got another MMS from the same person and it did the "downloading" as described above, and nothing!! I've asked for a resend, and the same thing happens. Will another text messaging app fix this problem? While searching the internet, this seems to be a common problem with this phone. Surely there has to be a solution to this, but so far I can't find anything. I had a low-end Samsung Proclaim and it worked flawlessly when receiving MMS texts. I'm on Verizon through Straight Talk.

Re: Can't download an MMS message, don't know what to do.

I have the same issue, but I've noticed if you try to download the MMS on wifi, it doesn't work. You might want to try turning off wifi and turning on 3g/4g to download the MMS. That always works for me.

Re: Can't download an MMS message, don't know what to do.

It's not optional - you must be using your Mobile data connection in order to send/receive MMS. You can also have Wi-Fi on at the same time, and you should briefly see the 3G/4G icon shown next to the Wi-Fi icon in the Status bar.

Some people have reported problems if Wi-Fi was turned on, and those people had to turn Wi-Fi off in order to get it to work, but I've never had that issue.

Thank you. Turning off wi-fi helped, at least with the last MMS I received. I noticed when I turn off my wi-fi, I only have a 1X showing in my status bar. Still seems odd that the downloads are so random for me.

If you reboot the phone with Wi-Fi turned off are you still stuck with a 1X signal?

GSDer... I rebooted and it still said 1X. I turned the wi-fi on, then off again, and it now says 3G. Go figure...
I think if the wind blows too hard here things go wonky! :-\

Sounds like you're in a marginal signal area. I almost never see 1X except when driving. If you didn't have Wi-Fi I'd suggest a Network Extender but I guess that's overkill.

One thing to note about SMS and MMS is they ride along on a carrier wave the phone always has on. Free for the phone company, but they charge you.
Attachments are data.

AC App on SGS3

I think its a Samsung issue...since there cently Samsung update 7/1/2014 the problem has begun...mind you I have only received pics from my apple friends (non android smart phones)I have since asked them to email me grandkids pics...but Hello this needs to be fixed

Have had this problem too. Just got this Samsung S 111 phone last few weeks. Tried all the suggestions about ensuring data is ticked as on etc. Even went through various processes with technical support. Gave up until this morning when I was out of my wifi area. Wifi switched off and my Google account said that I couldn't access because of parental controls. Phoned my provider and was told thus setting us now mandatory on all contacts as
" opt in". I asked them to lift the parental controls and HEY PRESTO !! Messages download. Once you have received one it does it automatically after that. Hope this helps someone else.

(((To the person that said download through your data rather than wi fi))

YES YES YES!!! Thank you!!! Perfect! That was it!!!
