Verizon Galaxy S3 - Jelly Bean Update and Google Maps/Navigation Rollback

Re: Jelly Bean Update and Google Maps/Navigation Rollback

How the hay were to know 4.3 would wipe out navigation.
If you took the time to read about 4.3 in the other carriers forums, you would have been well prepared for what this build offered (and removed).

It's also common for Google to include the latest version of their bloatware when they roll out a new release.

What is it saying when u try to install?? How bout a screen shot?

When I try to install Maps 6.14.4 this is what happens:
Screenshot_2013-12-20-12-07-50.png

I have a double version from xda that doesn't work perfectly...but the "Local" feature of it does work properly.

Here's a "Local" result for restaurants:
Screenshot_2013-12-20-12-24-20.png
Which returns the closest restaurant (el Burrito), and then one that is just past that restaurant (Subway)...

vs. a Maps 7.5 restaurants result:

Which doesn't even bother to list the closest restaurant...and returns completely different results every time you search, sometimes it will return results in Spring Lake...which is 12 or so miles away.

Try to disable the original maps before u install the old version.

I've tried that 😡 and pretty much every combination of clearing data, stopping, closing, disabling, enabling...

Re: Jelly Bean Update and Google Maps/Navigation Rollback

Just start your navigation from where you are at that moment.
Choose a new route, and be on your way.
A work-around is all you're going to get.

The previous version of Navigation it was two simple clicks and you'd have 3 alternate routes with traffic estimates from where you are currently. Workarounds are great and all, but not while driving in my opinion. Living in Los Angeles which is the equivalent to the devils armpit for traffic, I'd re-route constantly due to the awful traffic that would emerge on even a short trip across town. Another bonus would be how clear (and zoomed in) it would show the other routes and their various traffic slowdowns. If this single feature was added back, I'd be content as everything else I can live with. But I don't wanna die either fiddling with a workaround.

WHILE DRIVING (safety issue):

How many clicks does it take to get alternate routes from where you are currently on your trip?

OLD VERSION = 2

NEW VERSION = ?????

Re: Jelly Bean Update and Google Maps/Navigation Rollback

I don't know what everyone is crying about.
I still have Navigation on my phone, and it works just like it did before 4.3

You got the new 4.3 update and still have the old version of Navigation? Yes, the new "Maps" has Navigation built in which is all fine and well, but my point was that one could no longer rollback to the older version which was better on so many levels. Namely the one where you can check alternate routes from where you are currently on your trip in just 2 clicks.

The downloadable apk earlier in the thread with the old navigation...is that for rooted phones only?

It kinda works...and no, you don't need to be rooted.

Re: Jelly Bean Update and Google Maps/Navigation Rollback

Don't know where you see a downloadable apk in this thread, I can't find it. I had my phone updates turned off just to prevent v7 Maps from coming in. Then I got suckered in by a Samsung Update that brought the new Maps along for the ride, and now it's not uninstallable! Besides the navigation sucking (can't show/hide traffic layer while naving) I really miss the Local business searches. Besides having to scroll through huge graphics for Eat, Drink, Play, Shop, Sleep... (like I need a picture to figure those out), it now shows me places that are miles away and in no understandable order. Useless. Maybe I'll be forced to checkout an iPhone.

Re: Jelly Bean Update and Google Maps/Navigation Rollback

have you tried going into your apps through settings.. application manager, then ALL, find Maps, and then it should say something like "uninstall updates" or something along those lines. When I upgraded on my Note, it updated my maps. I uninstalled the updates (after disabling auto update in the Play Store) and I got my stand alone navigation back. Seems to work just fine... not sure if this is something you have already tried. Maybe this cant be done on 4.3? My apologies if I am suggesting something that has already been tried with no success... btw im on 4.1.2 not on 4.3

Correct - this can't be done on 4.3: it includes an updated version of Maps that you can't roll back.

You obviously know very little.

Many of us have been "rolled back" to an older version of Google maps around Maps 6.14 where the included "Navigation" portion worked much better. It worked much more like a standalone Car GPS navigator unit.

Many of us have car docks and used our phones as a primary Navigation unit on a daily basis. The NEW version of Navigation as of about 7 months ago is much "prettier" but is more work to use and just doesn't work as well as it used to. This "Apple-like" move to "aesthetics over functionality" upset a lot of us.

Apparently, not only did Google ruin the "Navigation" portion of Maps - know they have made it impossible for us to stay on an old version which worked very well. I would gladly pay to have the old Google "Navigation" Back.

If you want more information you can Google "new Google maps update sucks" and look for stuff related to "Navigation" starting around June of last year.

I would never have let the update go through on my phone if I knew I couldn't roll back Maps to a usable version.

I've been happy to run stock Android on my phone but it is time to start looking for a Custom ROM I can run an old version of Maps on.

Re: Jelly Bean Update and Google Maps/Navigation Rollback

Sorry if this has been answered but just looking for a little clarification... I've kept my Google Maps on version 6.14.2 for quite a while, mainly because I use the feature "My Maps" a lot when traveling. Does the newest version of Google Maps have the "My Maps" feature? If not, does anyone have a workaround?

I got old Maps and Nav (6.14.4) working on the 4.3 update on my Galaxy Note 2. Info and APK here: [APP]install Google Maps 6 and 7 and use them together[Root/NoRoot][02.01.2014] - xda-developers.

This works along side Maps 7. What is especially great about using this APK is you don't have to keep worrying about the Maps update - you can let Maps 7 update and it won't effect this Map version. I had to Clear Cache and Data on Maps 7 before I was able to login with Maps 6.14.4 and connect to "My Saved Places"

No we are screwed with the new maps. Use waze

I am with you! So frustrating when I know I have 3 different routes to get home and need to see which one is the best choice (NYC traffic). How the hell do you remove such a useful feature!

I downloaded that 6.8.1 version of maps that someone posted on this thread and it is the older look with the option for alternate routes. The alternate routes does work on the 6.8.1 but it will not log you in so I don't think it will save your info, I don't care about that. You'll have to manually enter address each time but well worth the effort if you want the old look.

You have to make sure your security settings allow you to install apps from outside the app store.

Google screwed the pooch on this one!!!

I can no longer roll back to the original navigation app. There were so many other problems with the new update, that I then chose to reset to factory defaults. That fixed many of my issues, but now google maps is still the default on the factory reset. It is unusable for my purposes. Does anyone know where I can get the original version? Or does anyone recommend a paid navigation app that works similarly to the original navigation app? Google maps may get better in the future, but for now I don't mind paying for what I need.
