Verizon Galaxy S3 won't connect via USB to my computer

After unsuccessfully trying pretty much all the solutions mentioned in this thread I've found a different one. It seems my S3 USB socket isn't working properly. It works well enough to charge but won't work normally to connect to my PC. Of the three cables I've tried one will work to connect it to the PC if I hold it in tightly.

Here's how I figured it out. Looking in the log files C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.app.log and setupapi.dev.log I found entries for devices with VID 0000 and PID 0000 at about the times I tried to connect the S3. Windows has no idea what this device is. When the S3 does connect properly (earlier just by plugging it in--now by holding the plug in tightly) the entries have a VID 04E8 and PID 6860.

Unless someone has an easier solution I guess I must now go through the trouble of replacing the USB socket. I've noticed that there are a few videos online showing how to do this. It seems to be a straightforward task but a delicate one.
