If the rumors are true and there is a Verizon exclusive, will that affect timely software updates and such vs. a model purchased straight from Google?

With Verizon, you never know...... It would not be the 1st time they jacked up a Google phone..

This is my main concern and I'm hoping we'll get more details on it. I know they said Google will do the updates. But I want to know that it will work like the iPhone on Verizon, where you can get the update from Apple the day they release it. I've been burned too many times by Verizon with they holding back updates (and worse). I was considering switching to ATT because of this, even though VZW works best in the areas I frequent. If I could get a phone that Verizon cannot hijack the updates, I'd probably just stay with VZW. Of course we won't know until the first major update, and I don't know if I can wait that long.

It shouldn't matter. Google updates their phones directly, even with Verizon.

That is not entirely correct.

For example, it took forever for my Nexus 5 (or, was it the 6? - either way, purchased directly from Google) to get a major OS update because it was on Cricket Wireless which is an AT&T MVNO and AT&T held up the OS release something like three months beyond when everyone else got it.

I wonder about this too. I also didn't see any confirmation on Verizon branding and bloatware. This all has me curious, as I am a Verizon user.

I don't think AT&T is any better in this department. They're worse if anything.

Rumored verizon bootloader is locked down. I would buy unlock from play store if you want it to use on verizon.

I am ready to Edge Up to a new phone. Will Verizon have the Pixel XL as an option? I can't afford to buy one outright at this time.

I am absolutely floored that Verizon got an exclusive that is actually good! Just so long as they don't bloat it up!

The bootloader being locked isnt as much of an issue to me as bloat and updates from google.

It will be an issue if the updates do not come right away and you are unable to side load since the bootloader is locked.

Agreed. And it seems my fears were confirmed today as it was stated Verizon will indeed be handling updates to the verizon model. Oh well, maybe someone will crack that bootloader.

The way Google is handling this, it looks like Galaxy nexus all over!

Galaxy nexus 2.0. It is a shame Google didn't push back on verizon, but guess this is what they get for selling their soul to big red just to get it on their network.

No matter what... buy the phone from Google. Verizon WILL find a way to mess up the phone. There's really no reason to get it from Verizon. If you're already on a payment plan with them, sell your current phone to pay it off, and start a new payment plan with Google. Swappa is a great place to sell your phone. I just sold my wife's iPhone 6s on Swappa in less than 24 hours so she could pay off her AT&T payments and get an iPhone 7 with Apple's upgrade program.

I would love to be able to pay off my phone payments by selling it on Swappa. There's just no way I can. I have another full year of payments on my LG G4. My payments were originally for an iPhone 6 plus and I sold it on eBay back in March for $500 and then bought my G4 brand new on Swappa for $300. Made $200 in the process but also locked myself in for a full two years. I would take a loss for sure if I sold it.

Take a loss and move on. You only go around once.

Oh not this time. Google announced that Verizon will have complete control over updates and bloatware. Thats why so many stories are breaking as to why you should buy your pixel from Google directly and NOT VERIZON.
