Verizon/Pixel XL and a Gong sound.

I called my brother, different area code, today using my Pixel XL. My Cell service carrier is Verizon. During the call I heard, and he says he didn't, a gong sound. Three times at irregular intervals.
Is this something new Google or Verizon have done? I shut down my phone 2, 3 times a week and have seen some changes due (I think) to OS updates but haven't notice any details on a "feature"(?) like that.

You weren't getting any notifications during the call, were you?

Possibly, that occurred to me as well. But it's not a change I'm aware of. What do I look at to see if incoming "news" gets a gong like that?

The next time you're on a call, make sure you clear out all of you notifications beforehand. Then, when you hear that gong, take the phone away from your ear and see if you have a new notification. Remember, the notification tone you hear when you're on a call will be much more subdued than your usual default tone (otherwise it'd be even more distracting and disruptive while you're on a call).
