Verizon Rumor - Killing grandfathered unlimited plans

Hmmm... Google Voice offers free unlimited nationwide calling.

Just need to find a free VOIP setup for the phone. Sipgate signups are closed in the US apparently.

Building and maintaining America's largest 4G LTE network certainly isn't cheap and they are a business, and in business to make money. I understand the new tiered system as it stands today, as a way of future proofing their ability to make money off their network. But to alienate its long term customers who have had unlimited data since it's inception, just seems like a bad move to me... My first smartphone, and which wasn't very smart, was the Motorola Q. I understand the need for limits, but I don't appreciate them being forced on the customers who paid the money you used to build this shiny new network.

I'm all for capitalism but they are stating this is happening based on nonsense b/c they are boasting huge increases in their subscriber base and boasting huge earnings figures. I agree they'd like to future proof but they rushed in & chose their own brand of LTE & speed and ran with it. That could be an issue in a few years when Clearwire starts deploying "true" LTE to the same markets. As I understand it, Verizon can't follow suit with theirs. Maybe they are fleecing now for lean times later.

Verizon is not a non-profit.

Well the last time the Verizon rep came to my door and twisted my arm til I signed a contract I thought they was in business to make me happy.
Are you seriously trying to say they are in business to make money, and that as a tax paying American citizen I am not entitled to an unlimited data plan.
I thought a constitutional amendment had been passed recently entitling me to anything I want at any price I feel like paying.

I don't want to lose my unlimited data either, but Verizon is going to do what they feel is best for the company, at that point I will either pay for that service or pay someone else to provide it.

Verizon isn't number one because of stupid decisions, I'm sure they know that if they do this they will lose customers, but to do so they must be pretty dam sure they will still come out ahead in the long run or they wouldn't even consider it.

They complain about increased bandwidth use but don't clarify if that is gross data (cumulative of all users) or per individual. Obviously, if gross data they're making more off each subscriber, so to tier just makes more money off everyone else.
I use very little their data because of wifi, but I still want the option without price gouging.

It was BS when texting plans cost $20 unlimited for sending out 5KB messages

5KB texts? Not even man! Most texts are in closer to the 118 *byte* range - not even 1K in size. Texting plans are simply so expensive so they can rape modern day users that are so anti-social they would rather text 30 times back and forth than make a 1 minute phone call. Them and parents who get cell plans for their modern day mindless drone kids that stay glued to their phone texting all day.

This is exactly why I don't have a texting plan, $20 is plain absurd. I have texting turned off under my verizon account yet I still get the errant message from a friend that didn't listen to me tell them not to text me. Not sure how they still come through if receipt of text message is supposed to be turned off, and I saw the rep do it. Either way though I'd rather pay the errant 25 cents for 2 messages a month than $20. And that still should be illegal. If someone want to scumbag me they could technically chain text me to the poor house - why is this allowed?

this is exactly as i have expected. You will only lose unlimited data when you sign up for a new contract AND get a subsidized phone. You can keep your rezound forever and still retain unlimited data or buy an unsubsidized phone and keep unlimited data.

As we have stated publicly, Verizon Wireless has been evaluating its pricing structure for some time. Customers have told us that they want to share data, similar to how they share minutes today. We are working on plans to provide customers with that option and will introduce new plans later this year.
When the new options are introduced, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to our customers purchasing handsets and signing a new contract. Customers who choose to purchase phones at full retail price and are currently on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan. The same pricing and policies will apply to all 3G and 4GLTE smartphones.
We will share specific details of the plans well in advance of their introduction so customers will have time to evaluate the plans and make the best decisions for their wireless service. It is our goal and commitment to continue to provide customers with the same high value service they have come to expect from Verizon Wireless.

Data Pricing

Full price phones for the win! Full price handsets are still cheaper than paying the data charges monthly... The key here is to not be fooled by a big initial data offering, and only to have them lower those amounts at a later time. Don't lose your unlimited plan! I am officially happy with that clarification.

You'll still be paying data charges monthly... now you get to add a one-shot full price phone to that. You don't really think VZW is going to lower their monthly charges just because they wont be subsidizing a phone over a two year contract, do you?

At 60gb/mo it takes 1-2 months of tiered data charges to make it worthwhile for me.

What do you think this is? Tmo?

Well I don't know if this is true or not but my brotherinlaws, sisters, boyfriends, aunts, husbands, third cousins, boss has a best friend who works at Burger King that knows a guy who lives close to a Verizon store that says this is all just a May fools day joke.

What is going to happen to those of us like me that switches between a 4g and a 3g phone from time to time? Wonder how they handle that IF they go back to the 3g to 4g upgrade costs you your unlimited?

Now I have to decide whether or not to try and squeeze in a phone before the switch happens or just tough it out.

I am sure the pricing structure will not help my decision...

I was reading an article that said if you buy a phone without the discount price you get to keep the unlimited data. And read an article that started it was for 3g only
