I have read a lot of different statements from different people on this, would like to find some facts from people who have done it. I am currently on Verizon and going to T-Mobile onto a family members plan (so T-mobile will not pay off my verizon phone, because it is not my plan). I owe xx amount on the phone with the edge plan. I am going to pay that off in full so the phone is under NO contract. I want to avoid having to pay off this phone and then put out another $500 for a new phone on T-Mobile.

I am reading alot that Verizon phones are unlocked but I tried a T-Mobile card in my phone now and is said my sim card is not from Verizon.

-Do I need to ask Verizon to unlock my phone once it is fully paid off?

-Do I need to change settings once I make this switch?

-Should everything work correctly? I have read from some people MMS will NOT work but everything else is fine. I have also read from other people that phone calls donot work correctly.

Thank you in advance for your help.

That says it's SIM-locked.

Yes - after it's paid, but while it's still on their contract. So just tell them that you want to pay the phone off, you don't want to terminate service. Then ask them to unlock it. If they say it is, hand them the TMobile SIM and ask them to show you.

-Do I need to change settings once I make this switch?
The APN has to be changed to TMobile's APN settings. (Settings/Connections/More Networks/Mobile Networks/Access Point Names. You'll probably have to add one, put in the TMobile data, back out, then select the TMobile one. Once you have the settings (T-Mobile APN Settings | T-Mobile APN Settings Android has them - scroll down to the first chart), it's 5 minutes to type it in and select it.

-Should everything work correctly?
That's what it says "in the book".

I have read from some people MMS will NOT work
Not if you don't have the TMobile MMS settings.

I have also read from other people that phone calls donot work correctly.
Wifi calling won't but normal 2G calls and texts should. 2G is 2G - all carriers use the same technology for voice.

1. It use to say "sim not from verizon" on my S6 that I bought for $599 from best buy. You had to force quit a system app to remove upon startup BEFORE updates. After words you could just swipe it away like any notification.

2. You need to change the APN settings to get everything to work. Phone calls and SMS will only work if you don't fix it.

3. I've read somewhere that the newer phones are automatically unlocked because of the FCC getting involved cause Verizon using some bands. So I am not sure if you would need to call them. (when I bought mine from best buy it only put in my sim)

4. MMS does work if don't correctly. Make sure you follow the T-Mobile APN settings EXACTLY!!!

EXTRA!!! PLEASE READ!!!!

When calling anywhere that requires using the dial pad (press 1 for room reservations, press 2 for etc) it WILL NOT WORK! somewhere in the phone settings you will find a weird setting that changes short pause to long pause change that setting and it'll work.

Phone battery might take a huge hit because not all the necessary bands are there. I sold my Verizon branded S6 because the front camera and battery... Once samsung fixed it and sent it back to me I tested the front camera and sold it for 400 and bought a factory unlocked one for $399 on ebay new condition.

Having a Verizon S6 on tmobile is PASSABLE but that's all I would put it at. If you could check out how much a new S6 is going for on eBay and try to sell yours locally (after unlocking for maximum value) for the same price I would HIGHLY recommend doing that. (Samsung is almost finished with Android 6.01 for the S6 and Verizon probably won't push that out till Q3 of this year and any unlocked units get it immediately after release)

Verizon's LTE phones have been shipped unlocked for a couple years. A few months ago I was flipping back and forth from Tmo to Verizon on my VZW-branded Q10 and never had a single issue and didn't have to configure squat. Shut down, swap sim, turn on. That's all it took. Same on wife's Galaxy S6 - swapped the tmo sim and her vzw sim back and forth, no issues at all.

I've been using a Verizon S6 on T-mobile and everything works perfectly fine.

With your reference to using the key pad for selecting options while on a call ex. pressing 1 or anything else. I had the same issue, I fixed by going into phone settings and change touch tone(DTMF) length to long. That'll take care of that issue for you.

I have Verizon S6 phone using for t-mobiles newwork as well., I can't get the text information to work on my phone, such 611, #BAL# (#225#), #MIN# (#646#) etc., do you know how to fix it?

thanks

Galaxy s5 verizon on family mobile network.
So here's what's happening to me. Verizon says it's unlocked. My family mobile network Sim is in. I can call. No mms no Internet no touch tone function for extentions or dialing menu options. So we did all the setting updates and the Internet works now. Nothing else. Technicians from my family mobile are "working on it". Still looking for a fix.
