Verizon 'significantly altering' unlimited data?

Not saying they should be cutting people off, but are there really that many users who go over 100GB in one month? I still think thats a pretty generous
allotment. I figured being the control freak giant that they are that they would have made that cutoff point a lot lower. When I had UL data I ran all my home internet needs which included netflix and never went over about 50GB. I know different people do different things with their different needs regarding data but I still think 100 GB is pretty adequate. They could have said 50GB. A few years ago when a lot of this UL stuff started coming down Verizon was saying most of their data customers used less that 2GB. So I'm actually kind of surprised they went as high as 100GB.
Forgot about poke-me-man , everybody needs truck loads of data for that. LoL!

Well, they threw out a vague "significantly above 100GB"... now, everyone should realize that, unless you run a VPN the entire time, Verizon knows everything that you are passing through your phone. And if you ARE using a VPN and chowing down on 200GB+ a month, that's sketchy in and of itself. This announcement is basically a warning to people to are using UDP to provide internet for several devices... and to get up well into the triple digits of GBs, you gotta work at it.

How much data are they using? Well, economies of scale. A small number of users are using a rather substantial amount of data.... we're talking ratios of 1:100+ (vs the 'average customer'). 10 of these dudes can pull down enough data as 5000 regular customers. I am sure Verizon has the metrics and I wouldn't think it would be all that hard to tell the difference between a heavy single device user and one running a mini ISP.

Sure but Verizon can't terminate someone just because they use hotspot with multiple devices, at least not without violating the terms of the 700MHz upper block c spectrum.

They can terminate people who use over a certain amount though.

Ok so I just had a talk with the area manager who oversees corporate stores in my area of NC, lower VA, western TN, and northern GA and yes, the rumors are true...he told me that if unlim data users have consumed more than 100 gigs AVERAGE, that vzw will be asking those customers to move onto another plan...those who don't comply will have their line or lines terminated that use more than 100 gigs on an average basis. He told me that the system will automatically calculate one's average use over the past 12 months and use those #s to determine who's affected and who isn't...so I went online to my Verizon and calculated my average usage and I'm sitting at 757.6 GB average per month lol

Hmm... 100 gb average is much different than well in excess of 100gb.

I wonder how they consider lines that are suspended for 3 months at a time

I've heard multiple things. Best response I've seen is 1500gb over 3 months

They can't just proclaim "network strain!" and use it as an excuse to shut people down? Surely there is some degree of verification involved for such a claim?

There is. "Most users use an average of 2-3 GB on our network. This one user is using 200,300,500 GB". Justification done (more or less). At the same time though they are eliminating them from the service which is apart of the ToS (if they see fit due to abuse). Not the same as the throttle before where they were selling you unlimited but then capping it behind the scenes. Two different things.

Right.... They wanted to throttle... FCC said no way. So then they say fine... We will just kick those using extreme data off their network.

Well, they threw out a vague "significantly above 100GB"... .

I don't care if Verizon creates new stupid rules for unlimited data plans. They are in business to make money and it's their right.

However.... I have been keeping my unlimited plan so I don't have to worry about occasional high usage. My monthly usage has been around 6gb to 8gb in the last 12 months. Every July/August, I go to my summer place and my usage spike up to 200gb to 250gb for about 1.5 months.

Will that cause Verizon to cancel my account? I'm still on contract until December 17, 2016. If they cancel me against my will, does my account still get charged the $350 ETF?(probably prorated down to around $170, at this point)

No one truly knows yet. From the latest info they said those who average 100 GB+ so if you don't average that you may be fine.

This is the sample letter.

That's all I have. AC must lower the quality because mine is clear.

They don't cancel you on contract based on the current rumors. Even if they did they would have to let you off without etf.

Let's say that 10% of people use terabytes but are paying tiered data plus overages... Would they stop those people who are heavily taxing shared resources so that everyone else own have a good mobile experience?

That letter offers no explanation as to why the customer is being forced to choose a tiered plan. In fact, it seems like a letter that can be sent to *any* unlimited data customer, even those who only use 10gb a month.

Nothing Verizon does seems to make sense anymore. Especially the news about Yahoo being sold to Verizon for FIVE BILLION DOLLARS next week.(sure hope it doesn't happen, but sure seems that way)
