Verizon turned on 5G nationwide.

Remember, 5G speed is from the tower to you. The speed from the server to the tower won't change a bit. So if you currently get a 3mbps average connection from a particular server, you'll still average 3mbps with 5G. (Even with an Ethernet connection from the phone to the tower it wouldn't change.) Bandwidth to the tower will go up, so if downloading a large file while watching a video makes the video mess up, maybe it won't with 5G. But no single connection will go faster with 5G than the internet speed it's going at. So even with the update, and having 5G roll out to the tower you connect to, you may not notice any improvement in speed. (Phones will definitely work better at things like shows, where hundreds or thousands of people are using their phone all connected to the same tower, but with COVID-19, that won't matter for a while.)

When FCC sells more mid- and high tier spectrum, then talk about 100Mb plus.

A lot sounds like billions of IoT devices embedded and networked connected to networks and talking to each other.

It's not just Verizon. AT&T is the same way. Map says 5G where I live and it's still 4G. They did the same exact thing years ago when 4G was coming out. Always jumping the gun on the map updates.
They shouldn't get away with that. Some buy phones and go with carriers based off service maps (hell, some buy homes and property, based off being able to get cell service).

I still have not seen 5G in any of the areas where I live. The coverage map shows I should have it at the house, but I've not seen it in the area yet. I did pass through a couple of major cities a few days ago, and I did get 5G there, but I did not test the speeds.

I don't expect to be impressed with the 5G "nation wide" signal speeds. More just want to see that they are working on it, at least. I expect it will still be a few years until we get true wide spread 5G ultra wide band speeds.

I'm now getting a 5G signal in my house. Maybe it took longer to actually turn it on than what Verizon claimed? Not faster than 4G. 53Mbps up, 2 down. We live outside of any city, so that's about what we got with 4G also.

We did a 14 hour drive yesterday and went through 3 major cities. Saw 5G in several places and test results were never impressive. Did not see 5G WB anywhere, but I was not watching it all that closely.

Took a short drive about 12 miles and tested speeds at each light I caught.
None ever showed 5G but I haven't got the update yet. But speeds were alll over the place.

It sounds like it's going to be an improvement for the masses. Individual speeds wont be faster but many more customers can maintain snappy connections to the towers without bogging down the system. Socialism?

My wife's S20Ultra says 5G while we're at home, but my Unlocked Note20 Ultra still only shows LTE with about 3 bars... The screenshot is from Sept. At the Airport where I get 5G UWB... The "5G" At my house is not the same... It's basically 4Glte Screenshot_20201122-051823_Speedtest.jpeg

Showing 5G every where I go now but definitely not 5G speeds. Ranges from 2mb download to 200mb download.

I have tmobile and get their 5 g 80% of the places I go now I know the speeds aren't close to mm wave but they are faster than 4g is. I have friends on verizon that have never seen 5g one complained and returned his 5g device because he was promised there was 5 g in his area. I think tmobile is and will be the 5 g winner in the end.

Are you using an old SIM from your previous phone or did you get a new SIM with the new one??

(EDIT: I just realized you are with Verizon and my experience is AT&T... but maybe the same issue with old SIM)

I wasn't seeing any 5G even though my daughters new 12 Pro was so I just popped in a new SIM got my 5G working.

I've had my N20U since launch but didn't upgrade my plan until last week. I was happy to leave it be because locally I can get 100 Mbps range with highs in 300+. But I got my daughter an iPhone 12 Pro and it was actually cheaper upgrading the the Elite plan so we did.

I thought 5G was limited in my area cause it always shows 5Ge and not a lick of 5G around town after the plan upgrade but my daughter told me hers says 5G everywhere!

So I went through chat support and in the end, swapped my SIM with the new one that came with my N20U. I actually didn't see the new SIM in the box I was so excited when I got my phone so I just used the SIM I had in my Note 8... which I also used as far back my iPhone 6S?? 5-6 year old SIM??

Had a few hiccups when they were assigning the number to the new SIM but once we got that sorted out... 5G signal immediately from my home!

I'm kinda cringing right now because quick speed test shows like 20 down and... 1 up from home  with no way to toggle 5G off. But I'll cruise around and do some testing. I posted they have been installing millimeter wave towers outside my neighborhood and it's a few thousand feel away from my house so we'll see.

I was using my old card , never got a 5G card with my unlocked phone that I use on Verizon

I went to the company store and got a 5G card , I have yet to see 5G

Verizon turned on "FAKE" 5G it's just rebranded 4G and it's slower than 4G

I don't plan on upgrading to 5G ever, or at least until they get rid of 4G and give me basic 5G for free... but I'll never pay for it. 4G is way faster than I've ever needed ;)

There was a OTA update that had to be installed on Verizon phones before the 5G would show up. It was discussed early on in this thread. Seems like the unlocked phones are the last ones to get updates, so you may have to wait a bit. But as felloffthetruck says, it's just fake 5G at this point.

You would think the they would know if there was a OTA update .

I can wait.
