Verizon's new tiered data plans

Wifi is my friend. I haven't gone over 2 GB for over a year now.

A big part of the reason I'm holding on to my unlimited data plan is that even if I were to fit in 2GB/month now, new apps/services developed over the next few years will probably increase the average data use per user. Where 2 GB may suffice today for many people, we may find it inadequate for even an "average" user 2-3 years from now.

Very much this...

please do not believe people who say you won't save or that it's impossible to save.

I work selling verizon wireless service and most people are not like us, most people don't use a ton of data. Most people use less than 2 gb. Seriously.

Usually when I look at a plan I advise them to switch, I look at their usage (specific months as well as average data use) and most people are paying around 130 for a single line with x amount of minutes and unlimited data but using less than (in some cases FAR LESS THAN) 2 gigs.

I priced verizon a few years ago when I was trying to leave sprint and it would have cost me 130 per month to go with verizon. one hundred thirty dollars.

Meanwhile, a 2 gb plan on the new share everything plan with just ONE LINE is 100 dollars. That's 2 gigs, unlimited talk, and unlimited text.

130>100.

So yes, most people DO save money. If you use 4 gigs - you'd save money. you use 6 gigs, you'd save 10 bucks, you use 8 gigs you'd break even.

This is of course unless you have a legacy plan with a very small monthly bill.

see what YOUR data usage is to determine if it's worth it.

there's a very small percentage of people that I advise NOT TO switch which is those who have really high usage! I saw a guy that had 172GB per month in usage. He definitely advised him NOT TO switch. He'd be paying 2,470 per month with that typa usage.

Exactly. Like any other company Verizon is always looking for ways to increase revenue.
The "unlimited program" was made available during a time when 2GB was huge and not realistic for most. At the time Verizon was making bank on many that were on unlimited but never came close to using it.
With the constant advancement of technology and dependence on "data" Verizon now realizes that an "unlimited program" is not cost effective....for them. They know now that data is king and people will be using more and more with no end in sight.

My advice, hold on to your unlimited plans whatever it takes.
The day will come when 2GB will be / can be used in a day.

I have the unlimited on my phone, the wife has 2Gb on hers (so I use our free upgrades through her line) and it would cost us more to switch to the new plan.

We don't text (we have smartphones...) and with the new plan, they won't honor my 20% company discount on my data costs.

Most importantly, I can just leave 4G on all the time and not worry about consumption.

Pretty easy decision for me.
