Vertical split screen issue on LG G4

My G4 is about a week old. I have not had any issues until this morning when it started behaving very badly. When holding the phone vertically, the screen was splitting in half, and half of it was freezing. Sometime it froze with whatever was on the screen, sometimes it turned into colorful "static" . Restarting the phone didn't help, although the issue is somewhat intermittent. When the phone is turned horizontally, the same issue continues, which make me think it is a hardware issue. I haven't dropped the phone or had any water issues. Anybody else had similar trouble?

Thanks

I have no such issue with my personal G4.

Take it back for a replacement. Looks like you've got a very wonky unit.

Check out this thread http://forums.androidcentral.com/showthread.php?t=544694 - another person reporting the same issue.

I've just started experiencing the same thing. I've had my phone for about 2 weeks. My son also got a G4 on the same day and hasn't had the issue. My carrier is Sorint. I'll be calling them tomorrow to get a replacement.

Ha! Good luck. My screen just did it oading this reply page. Sprint told me to contact lg. I'm regretting switching from vzw to sprint. Vzw would have handled no problem. I also have issues starrting up the camera

I've had my Sprint G4 almost 2 weeks, and haven't seen this issue. Hopefully you can get it replaced.

Sent from my Sprint LG G4 using Tapatalk.

the same happened to me . just right after the 14th day

My phone is about 2 months old....and does this from time to time. Which is VERY annoying. I had searched but didn't find anyone else with the issue. After reading that link (didn't see that)...and that LG/Sprint/Verizon,etc. KNOWS it is an issue....I think I might wait for a fix rather than have to back up my stuff....or have them do a factory reset...or a refurb.

Sounds like you have a poor Sprint store in your area. I'm the area repair manager in my town for 4 Sprint stores, and I literally just had this issue come in today. If you have insurance, and the device had no physical/liquid damage, the service & repair center at your local Sprint store should have ordered you a replacement device.

So either you didn't have insurance, or you didn't go to a S&R Sprint location. Or they just really do not know how to do their job properly. Either way, I hope you get your issue resolved.

As for what causes the vertical separation, I have no idea. I put a new screen on the device that it was happening to and it continued. Makes me believe there was an issue with the motherboard itself, and not the screen.

Ryan.

Needing insurance is what makes it ridiculous. This is a warranty issue, not an insurance issue caused by user negligence. From my experience, if it was within 6 mo/s to a year, Verizon would give the user a replacement and send your broken phone back to LG.

But we're not talking about Verizon, are we? Sprint has their own policies, not that I agree with all of them. If you want to go through the warranty of the phone, you have to go directly through the manufacturer*. Sprint will replace android phones without insurance, but there is a $75 charge with the option to add insurance afterward. Sprint does not have the overhead for carrying replacement phones in stock like Verizon and AT&T do, though I wish they did so my customers do not have to wait a few days for the replacement to come in.

*usually. Sprint and Apple have a friendship and they honor warranty replacements without insurance.

Happened to me too - TWICE, got the second unit and it was fine until this past weekend and it started again. Very Sad! Will probably have to go into a Samsung :(

I've had it happen once, very briefly (a fraction of a second) and everything was fine afterwards... I don't think it's anything to panic about unless it happens all the time and interferes with using the phone. In my situation, I think I was stressing out the "phone radio", making it look, over and over again, for signal that was really not going to be found.

Add me to the list. I have a release day phone ordered online from Sprint. I used the Arlo app to view my home wifi cams. I was using the pinch & zoom function and half my screen went to rainbow snow. I'm going to try and stop at the Sprint store to see if they will just replace it. I do not have insurance with them. We'll see, but the guys are usually a-holes at my local store in any situation.

Otherwise if this keeps up tonight, I'll fill out an LG support request. UGH. Just work damnit!

Frank,

I'm sorry the Sprint location you go to isn't the best, at my stores we definitely strive to try to get you an excellent experience and to do everything we possibly can for you. Also, make sure you go to a certified Sprint Service & Repair location, not every Sprint store has a service center. If you do not have insurance they will have to charge you $75 to either try replacing the screen, or to order you a new one. There is really no way to get around the service charge, unless they just decide to not charge you(which they honestly probably won't do since you said they are a$$holes at your local store).

The only "free" option would be to fill out LG support request, or contact their customer support to see about getting LG to replace the device.

Sorry about the phone acting up, I hope the situation gets resolved.

Ryan

Thanks for the response Ryan. Last night the screen would go back to normal and then back to the rainbow snow. Today is all rainbow snow and it won't go away. I skipped the Sprint store this morning hoping my issue wouldn't be so bad, but it's not going away now. I'm flipping the phone all over the place trying to see the top and bottom half of my screen.

I've filled out an LG request to get that dialog started. In this case, I'm lucky enough to have my old Nexus 5 to fall back to. I only switched to the G4 because my screen cracked. I hope this can be fixed with a software issue. I've seen in the past that people have had entire circuit boards replaced for something that could have been fixed with a small patch or fix from XDA. (FYI I have not rooted this phone yet, still stock)

P.S. I took a screenshot and it doesn't show the rainbow snow on half the screen. It's like an overlay that won't go away.

So you just skipped the Sprint store all-together? Might not be a bad thing, if LG agrees to replace it under warranty (which I don't see why they wouldn't). You wouldn't believe the amount of G4s we have had come in to my service center in the past week or two... a very alarming amount. Most of them with either the half-screen issue, microphone going out, or overheating (most of them half-screen issue). I wouldn't be surprised if Sprint made it a known-issue in their systems so that we can warranty exchange the device even if there is no insurance. They've done this before with the G2, because it had/has a very bad issue where the top 1/4 of the screen will not respond to touch at all.

Hopefully the issue gets resolved quickly!
