Very disappointed in the camera

The stock software for the camera is crap. Unless the light is excellent, its extremely sluggish...I installed FxCamera (free version) and instantly the camera worked better taking quality pictures...I'm going to play around with the different programs until I find which one I like best, but I definitely advise using different software. There is nothing wrong with the hardware its purely motorola's inability to put together a snappy camera and a smartphone.

I'm a bit surprised no one has gone into the AOSP, dug out the camera code from that and made an app like has been done on the gallery.

I have to agree. My incredible 2 took much better pictures. All the colors on the pictured taken with the bionic seem muted

Yea...checking other forums and ppl posting pics....Vignette takes better low light pics. I would also guess some camera app would make it take better pics overall.

I had no idea software could make a difference in the camera....

Vignette also lets you use the volume button as a camera button.

i took pictures with vignette and all my pictures still had crappy colors
they were all muted and washed out. thats actually a deal breaker

Ya same here. I cannot believe how bad the camera is in this phone. Software can only do so much to a picture if you have a crappy sensor like this phone has.

Didn't know about the volume rocker being a camera button...that's sweet. And yes, software is always the driving force behind any hardware. I'm interested in seeing some side-by-side comparisons of the stock app and Vignette on the same subject. I should be getting enough money probably tomorrow to buy this thing, so I'll be throwing a ton of that kind of stuff in the mix.

Some people are saying that the sensor sucks. I have yet to really get to use it, but better software is always a good solution. Hopefully Motorola will address their problems with their camera apps across the board. What were you all expecting? This is just a bump from the Droid 3 camera, and that camera was awful.

Software can only do so much if the sensor is garbage. Ya I can run the photo through Photoshop, do some Nik Sharpening, adjust the levels and all the colors, but it doesnt mean that the camera took a good picture.......

I really like lgCamera Pro. Hard to comment on speed though because almost any camera app is slow on my phone. (Optimus V).

Took some pictures with mine today, and they didn't come out good at all.
I happened to look at the glass covering the lens and noticed it had quite a few fingerprint smudges on it. I wiped it off with a soft cloth, and pictures came out so much better.

Lynx, you are 100% correct. Awful colors, slow to shoot. Every photo I have taken is blurry... that's with the subject being told to not move a muscle. I don't want to have to go install an app to fix the issue. I don't know....

Have you tried taking them in Sports mode, rather than Auto, for faster shutter speed?

Finally played with the camera today. I am an amateur photog although I don't use me phone camera hardly ever. I have to say the out of box performance is horrible! No stabilization built into the software so everything is blurry unless in bright sunlight, and the colors are a very cool blue. Definitely need better software, at the least. Going to try some now... More later.

Addendum: tried the 2 recommended above (Vignette -- ok but didn't like interface, too many clicks to get a pix to take but this is personal preference, Camera360 crashed constantly for Bionic, maybe needs update). Pix with these 2 softwares were still MUCH better than the camera preinstalled on the Bionic.

I bit the bullet and bought Camera Zoom FX for $4.99. MUCH better pictures than the other 2 programs. However, overall the low light pix are still really weak compared to my Droid X. Very grainy. The focus problem and the dull color problem is pretty miuch solved with this software though. So it's a keeper. However, I expected a significant imrovement in the camera compared to a phone that is 2 years old like the Droid X. Still not happy but happier than I was this am!

Here are some pix uploaded. Note that they are with the paid app CameraZoom FX ($5), which I found REALLY helps. WIthout it even the daytime pix look washed out. I included a pix of my Droid X too.

I never felt that my Droid X took good pix in low light and I am surprised to see that the Bionic does take better pix, but not by much. I didn't bother taking full sun outdoor pix because I know all cameras do well with this, although if anyone wants, I am happy to. I was trying to show difficult lighting conditions... Scroll to the bottom of each picture for comments.

CameraZoom FX works so much better!

Take a look at my link above. I added some more shots. I used CameraZoom FX on the Droid Bionic because the stock camera was so aweful I didn't want to bother. After playing with my Droid X side by side with the Bionic, I have to say it's a tossup between the two cameras for night shots (both pretty aweful) but I am getting more "keepers" with the Droid X sadly. Daytime is about the same for both phones and is very good but not as nice as my DH's iPhone4.

Camera is OK, but pictures are not as good as those I've seen taken on other phones.

Yeppir, the sub-par camera reviews killed the deal for me! So glad I didn't rush out to buy it! :(
Will there ever be an Android Monster with a FANTASTIC camera?

iFixit says it is the same sensor as the X. If this is true it is a subpar sensor. The only decent pics are outdoor daylight shots.
Indoor will by grainy and 90% of the time will be out of focus.

You would think that more than a year of complaints Moto would have updated it.
A 3mp sensor with better sensitivity would be much better overall.
I guess this is what happens when marketing is driving the innovation instead on engineering.

Lack of ability to change camera settings is a deal breaker for me. With my Droid X I installed Ecamera and was able to change settings to vga as default and able to upload via email to the office 15 20 pictures at a time. Cruical in my business. Does anyone know of any camera app that works with Bionic that will allow me to do? Ecamera and 360 camera do not. Suggestions?????:'(
