Video call over wifi

Everytime I've tried using video call while connected to any wifi network it gives me a message that it can't continue over wifi and if I want to continue anyway. We even tried it with my dads s9+ and got the same message.

Way back when I had iphone I know I was able to face time over wifi so I'm not using data.

My parents are going on a 2 month long road trip to sight see but also see family that we have spread out across the U.S. and while they are gone I'm "babysitting" their dog. My dad thought it might be good to do video chat so that my mom can see her dog. My mom has dementia so we are hoping it will cheer her up but I'm also hoping it will cheer my mom's dog up because it's easy to see that she is depressed.

Sorry for the long story but does anybody know how to be able to use video call over wifi so we aren't using data everytime?

Thanks

Just clicking on the contact I want and using the stock video caller by clicking the camera instead of clicking to make a regular call.
Oh, ok ..not sure you be able save on data as it uses I believe both ...maybe data save mode could help

Making a video call from the Phone app utilizes LTE (it's a part of "Advanced Calling" or calling over LTE), so I believe you'd need your cell radio to be on. Facetime is a different platform (kind of like iMessage), which doesn't require cell signal. You'd have to use something like Google Duo or Hangouts Chat to make a video call without cell signal (https://support.google.com/duo/answer/6376137?hl=en).

Also the way I've been doing it is while I'm in a regular call i initiate the video call but is there a way to go back to just a regular phone call without completely hanging up? I couldn't find a way but I'm also searching these things on google to see if I can find out anymore.

Sorry, I don't know about that. Your carrier might have a more definitive answer.

No , you have to hang up and call back

Probably depends on carrier but based on memory it requires data but doesn't count against the plan.

I wish there was a way to go back to regular call, I think that's something they could work on.

And my carrier is verizon. The next time we do a video call I'm going to write how much data I've used to see if it changes.

Yeah, I agree with L0n3N1nja, the video call almost certainly doesn't count against your monthly data allotment (the same way the data that MMS messages uses doesn't count either).
