Video playback artefacts (blocks)

Hi all,

I've noticed this now in 2 apps, Facebook and BT Sport, that when playing videos the playback has random blocks appearing on the screen as artefacts. It's a bit hard to explain but it's kinda like what you get when a satellite signal goes a bit wonky and 2 frames of video end up displaying partially at the same time, or like when the weather is bad.

I've tried changing the screen from WQHD to FHD and it makes no difference. It's not all videos though, but most and not as soon as the videos loads but several seconds in random square blocks appearing on the video for a split second.

Anyone else experienced this?

Paul.

Do you see this in same videos but on different device or computer? If video isn't fully loaded it'll normally just buffer. Artifacts like you describe kinda sounds like what I'd get when I overclock my GPU too much on PC and video would look messed up. I doubt thats your issue but it sounds like it. Does it happen with YouTube videos in 1440p? I say that as those high res videos will tax the chips more than low res Facebook video. If YouTube in high res looks fine I'd say it's a problem with the videos or the app

No all videos on others devices work just fine. Only happens with streaming videos and only on the S8+. This is what I see on most apps :

Dude fellow MotoGP fan! Just finished watching FP1 and FP2, can't wait for quali and the race on Sunday!

Haha me too! I'm going to the Silverstone round again this year!

And just to add this DOES affect locally stored videos as well so it's not just limited to streaming videos sadly.

Well Samsung live chat were useless, local Samsung Support Centre were rude and unhelpful and Samsung over the phone will it replace the device even though I've only had it for 2 days. They will only let me send it back to be examined and decided if it is faulty or not before issuing a repair. Absolutely shocking service so far and wishing I'd not made the swap from my iPhone.

Ok. Most apps you said? I've used Facebook video, YouTube, Netflix, and Vudu. Not seen anything like that. What app did you use to stream there? And have you had same issues in apps I listed above?

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, BT Sport (the one in the video). Even videos I've shot on my phone or copied to my phone exhibit the same behaviour, when played in the built in Gallery app or MX Player.

Last resort would be factory reset but that kind of artifacting across the board is normally a hardware problem. If you just bought device couple days ago, just go return it and get another one.

I bought it direct with Samsung online. They've told me they will only issue a replacement when mines been sent back and the fault examined.

Well, you got video of the problem. Do factory reset to cover your bases. Then perhaps take another video while it's doing it in another app. That way you got proof. Once you call them back to start the process I'd demand they cross ship you a replacement. Might have luck pushing back

Exactly what I did, they are still wanting to have the phone back to examine before issuing a replacement so I have exercised my rights to demand a refund unfortunately. Utterly appalling service from Samsung from start to finish, with the exception of the initial ordering of the phone.

Considering the bad press around their phones in the last 12 months with battery fires etc Id have thought their customer service would be a little more spot on, but it seems in my case they really don't care.
