So far I have yet to find a reason to upgrade. What I mean by that last phone I had I couldn't wait to upgrade but now I find a problem and wondering if it's common. When I was at a party event I decided to start recording and that's when I noticed that the video was recording darker than when I take a photo. Is this normal?

Yes. The optics have to be open shorter than when photographing. If you notice it, in auto mode during the night the photos have more light but if anybody moves he gets blurred.
I also find very little reason to upgrade, when I had samsungs (s3, note 2, s4) I was always eager to upgrade to something better. I have the m8 for a year and a half and I am still very much in love with it. It's a shame htc is passing through such a hard time.
