why do my friend's iphone videos look like they were shot on steadicam? and my G8 videos with 'steady recording' look like i am holding an 80s camcorder in an earthquake??

Is the stabilization better if you shoot at lower resolution/framerate?

I shoot at 1080 30fps and the stabilization has been excellent. I've never used an iPhone for video before so I don't have a frame of comparison but the G8 has serviced me well.
