Video Transfer / Encoding?

Like most people, I have ample videos on my computer that i want to view on my phone. (Mainly DVDrips )

What sort of encoding needs to be done so that the videos can be viewed on the phone. I am assuming 480x800 h.264 or something similar?

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I use DVD CATALYST from tools 4 movies.com its not free ($10) but it will encode anything for any device.

I have heard great things about handbreak, but since I am on a netbook (1024x600 resolution), the program will not run

I may have to load up a brothers computer or something of that nature. Thanks for the help guys.
