[Review] Vignette Camera App for Android

As a hobbyist photographer, by far one of my favorite apps for my phone is Vignette. I don't always have my DSLR kit with me and sometimes you come across shots that need to be taken...Vignette works both as a standalone camera app or as an tool to creatively edit existing photos.

There is a demo version - so give it a try, but I think it's well worth the price for the full version (UK?2.99/US$4.49 approx)

Vignette - Android app on AppBrain

chart

Add film and camera effects to your photos.

• 62 effects & 44 frames
• Favourites
• Full res.
• Flash (if avail.)
• Self-timer, fast shot, steady shot
• Zoom/crop
• Silent mode
• Geotagging
• Portrait mode
• Help screens

Updated often to support new phones. If you have problems e-mail us at neilandtheresa@googlemail.com

The software works in both portrait and landscape mode now - but for the ease of screen caps with my setup all shots are in Portrait and on the Droid Incredible.

When you fire up the app you'll be given a typical camera-esque interface

Touch any of the options on screen to access their settings etc

Starting from the left - if you click on Normal you are presented with these options

Most are fairly self explanatory, blind mode turns off the display so you can't see what you're actually shooting at...

Clicking on the Composition Guide at the bottom will change what you see in the viewfinder (this is serious camera geek composition stuff here - I have rule of thirds turned on - those are the black grid lines in my first screen cap)

Click here for more information on the Rule Of Thirds and the Golden Ratio

Back to the main screen - and next up Flash settings

Next, ISO and White Balance settings...etc

Image quality settings (including Geo tagging photos)

and the far right and the most fun....effects and frames!

clicking the effects menu gets you to these options...

You can also tweak your effects by clicking on Customise (I know spelled wrong)

Another great feature is the ability to import images you've got saved in the phone in to Vignette - clicking menu from the main screen gives you the following...

There are TONS of settings and features to play with, feel free to ask me any questions...

And now on to some examples :)

Here's the original shot from my Droid Incredible that I'll be using

i've never seen either app but what's your opinion of how does vignette compares to photofunia?

I've never used photofunia but it appears to just 'let you add cool photo effects and create funny face photo montages'

not actual photo editing the likes of what Vignette can do

can you do funny things to photos with vignette? can you vignette a photo then use photofunia to make it funny?

thanks

Thanks for the review!
I may buy the app.
I shoot professionally on the weekends and I needed a wide angle shot of a stadium and used the incredible...It was great for print for the paper.

I think this will replace one of my point and shoots in my bag...

BTW Ardent what do you shoot with?

Cannot believe I bypassed this for Picsay last night! lol

Thank you for posting up such a thorough and comprhensive review of the app.

Very much appreciate the work you put into this.

Excellent job!

I primarily shoot my Nikon D300 with a D60 backup (the girlfriend uses the D60 when we go out shooting)

and thanks for the kudos - I noticed there was no review out there and plenty of people were asking about photo apps so I decided to put together a quick write up about it in hopes of helping people get the most out of their phones. I am in no way affiliated with the devs - I just like to promote apps I feel strongly about :)

So, I have a question. On the most recent update of this app, I can't turn off the self-timer. I turned it on for some reason and now I can't get rid of it. On the "self-timer" screen, there is no "0 second" option.

Anyone?

hrm - when I set the self timer and take a picture after it takes the picture it locks up and will eventually FC on me now and I can't get back in to the app (it just keeps FC'ing when I try to start the app)

if you upload pics to flickr and can use piknik does the image editing of vignette have and advantages?

I downloaded the demo version and just needed a little convincing to go for the paid version. This did it. Thanks.for the great review and examples!

I got Vignette recently, and love it. I even opted for the paid ver. I'm able to get some really great shots without having to know tons of stuff about Cameras. Plus it works faster then the stock camera app for regular photos as well.

I bought the paid version of this a few weeks ago, and still love it. I must admit, I usually shoot with the regular camera and use Vignette afterward to tweak the image, but Vignette does work really nicely as a fully-functioning camera replacement too, and I like the fact that you can use it in either mode. One thing I appreciate is that the developers are constantly tweaking and improving Vignette -- there are very regular updates, so it should hopefully only continue to improve.

Here's one of my favorite shots I took using Vignette:
