Virgin Mobile Does NOT Want Us To Root

good point. best chance is to convince VM that these are mobile computers that can make phone calls. but, as of now, the phones are tied to the network in that you just can't buy '3g' time like you buy DSL (or whatever) like you do for your computer.

i agree, it would be silly if my DSL carrier said i had to buy their computer and if changed the OS, i would be beaten with a hose.

perhaps the outcry needs a bigger scope in that carriers provide the connections and others provide the phones (sorta happens now, but more in general). but as long as people are spending $200 for a phone and $2k for contract, i dunno ....

You can buy 3G time for your PC from almost every carrier, think USB 3G dongles. The same network, but used for your PC, not a phone with a particular OS.

I just can't figure out how logic dictates the current state.

I tried vm's usb dongle, it bit.
my V kicked its behind consistently as far as speed, in the same physical location, whether tethered or on its own.
my device, rooted on day 1, I wouldn't have purchased if it wasn't an "openable" handset.
when all I was interested in was the price of service, I owned a $15 vm phone.
I got a rumor touch as a device which could have 3rd party apps installed (with a bit of hacking) and upgraded to the optimus v when user reviews didn't point out many issues with the handset.

Most users don't care aboutan unlocked bootloader
most users don't are about ROMs or even what version of Android they are using

I couldn't begin to count the number of my friends who couldn't even tell me the android version of their phone. A lot couldn't even tell me the name of it, its just the Droid to them.

VM is prepared to give up a VERY small percentage of potential users for the trade of the wave of people wanting this new and impressive non-contract phone.

Sadly this is the most true statement made regarding this whole ordeal.

IF and I do mean IF we can get Koush of ClockworkMod to bootstrap the phone then custom roms will be possible. If moto is truly unlocking the bootloader but locking it for carriers then it wont be hard to crack. The non Droid 1 phones were locked because Moto didnt want the bootloader unlocked. Not because Verizon wanted it locked.

The phones that have been carrier locked, always end up cracked shortly after release. I think if we get enough people working together the new moto phone will be no different.

again, we are in violent agreement here. at one point, i seriously considered buying the china version of the peel (until sprint sold it officially), put my itouch in it and use a voip as a cheap iphone. also thought about tearing a dongle apart and wiring it to an itouch. also considered toting a mifi around.

and then thought why are making me do this? oh right, $$$$$$$
