Has anyone gotten the built in visual voicemail (or even just a message indicator) to work on AT&T or Cricket? I have read Verizon is supported, but when I get a voicemail (on Cricket) I get the notification in the notification center, but there is nothing in the phone app that indicates there is a voicemail, not like the separate tab I see on the screenshots from others. I don't need transcripts or anything like that, but it is nice to see the list of messages and be able to just delete them if they are not important. I know there is a visual voicemail app for Cricket, but I would rather not have another app to do something that seems like it is built in.

It is working on T-Mobile.

Go into your phone app.. At the top right go to the menu then settings. Ensure your number is entered as the voicemail number. At first mine was some random number but I set my T-Mobile number in there and rebooted... Bam voicemail :).

It doesn't work for Cricket. Have to use their app for visual voicemail unfortunately.

Tried that, still the same.

That stinks. Like I said I don't need transcription, just an easier way to manage voicemails. It worked on my previous iPhone 6S as well as my $60 Windows 10 phone. How can Google not figure it out, especially on a flagship phone?

You could do what I did when I didn't want to pay for VVM on verizon back in the day. On all the carriers there should be process for to redirect voicemail to an external system, namely to the VM for your google voice number. Voice might even have the directions on how to do it. After that you get downloadable MP3 voice mails with an ok to kind of bad transcript.

That's an option, but I just wanted to be able to see I have voicemails right in the phone app (even a count indicator at the bottom would be fine). I don't want to have to call or to go to another app. I guess I will just hold out to see if it gets fixed. Until then I will listen to the dead air of my voicemails and press the dialpad buttons to delete them. Not the end of the world, just annoying and inconvenient.

I use Google Voice, but with my regular phone number. Google Voice gives true visual with Transcription of your voicemail.

If you use the Google voice voicemail with your existing number and you get a voicemail does it still come in via hangouts? Does it integrate with the Pixel dialer for voicemail?

They figured it out, and exactly one carrier added support for it AFAIK, T-mobile... Unless by figure it out you meant not just build in support for native voicemail but also force carriers to support it... Making it work requires back end work on both ends.

At least AT&T and VZW let you use their voicemail apps on a non carrier phone, Sprint doesn't even do that so anyone on the fourth largest carrier is forced to use the GV workaround mentioned above or go to an alternate voicemail service like YouMail.

This from the same carrier that used to feature an unheard of level of Google Voice integration... Sigh. I'm pretty happy with Sprint overall, but little irritations like this and lack of hotshot on older plans is making the itch to switch stronger.

Don't know about hangouts. But this is what the app looks like. I can tap on a message and it gives me an option to call the contact. I don't use my Google Voice number much, but Google voice can be used as your default voice mail with your regular phone number.

I understand it has to be supported by the carrier, but why would the carriers support it for Windows Phone and not Android???

Google Voice Lite sounds like what I would be after, but it is only supported by Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile, not MVNOs (Straight Talk, Cricket, etc.). Oh well.
