VLC not recognising OTG directory files via USB

When I attach a USB drive via USB-C to USB OTG cable adapter then insert to Xperia XA2 H3113 Android Pie 9.0.0 it doesn't recognise the directory although it shows as OTG Device.

Any ideas please?

Using File Commander and yes it does once I give it permission initially.
However, I have two explorer apps, second one came preinstalled, I have tried changing defaults but still no luck.

When I tap on OTG Device it will often open up in the preinstalled explorer but when I hit on select once the files are showing it reverts to VLC and says no files in directory.

Then if I try the same method again vlc says no files in directory bypassing the file explorer this time.

Any ideas before I try asking the developer?
