Voice Quality Issue

I'm on day 2 with the Atrix, following 2 years with an iPhone 3G. I'm enjoying the Atrix so far. The problem: Two out of three people that I routinely talk to tell me that my voice quality is worse than with the iPhone. They volunteered their opinions without me mentioning I had a new phone. One said I sounded less clear and the volume was lower and the other actually said my voice sounded muffled. I was calling from a quiet environment. I can hear the person on the other end fine - as well or better than I could hear them on the iPhone. I am surprised because most Atrix reviewers seem to say people they call report that their voice quality and volume are good or very good. I tried different settings on Settings>Call Settings>Noise Suppression, to no avail (although I did not expect this to have much impact since I was calling from a quiet environment).

I would welcome any suggestions or comments. Are there other settings or adjustments I can try? Can anyone suggest a way to determine whether my phone is defective?

Well nobody's said anything to me about it but I noticed when recording my Voicemail message that it does sound a bit muffled. It's not bad (easy to understand and clear), but it's something I noticed.

On the other hand, I've had a *bunch* of people tell me I sound clear and loud when using my bluetooth headset. My car has a bluetooth module in it and I've used it for years. I've used multiple phones with it, my last being an iPhone 4, but people have told me lately that I sound crystal clear and much louder. They didn't even know I got a new phone.

That would lead me to believe the problem is something to do with the noise suppression. The phone must do some kind of noise suppression before sending out the signal, even with the option off.

I had the exact same issue. As strange as it sounds, when I went to the AT&T store the first thing they did was to give me a new sim card - and it worked. I'm still not sure how that would change things, but the customer service guy told me that was the first step on his list of fixes.

So I ended up trading phones with my gf to test the quality and hear for myself since she has the iPhone 4 as well. It sounded fine for the area we were in, the call was clear and loud. I don't get a very strong signal where I live but where she lives it is a lot stronger and had no call quality issues. Maybe I guess depends on your area.

That also may be something to try since I'm using my Micro Sim with a SIM adapter in my Atrix.

My wife and I each just got an Atrix. We both love the phone, and have had it for a few days. We became really quick converts after living iPhone for years.

The first time she called me, her voice sounded faint and muffled, but we just ignored it. Then I took a long business call, and the person I was talking with said the voice quality was horrible. I plugged in a headset, and everything was fine.

My wife and I then went to the mall yesterday, and called each other. The voice quality was really bad, muffled and a little choppy. Strong signal. We swapped phones - no difference. I googled it, and found the posts on this forum. I turned off the noise cancellation, and it got better. My wife did the same - ditto. However, it's still a bit muffled, and not nearly as good as my ex-iPhone.

We went into the AT&T (full service) store and showed them the problem. The tech immediately agreed that it didn't sound very good. He checked his system, but didn't find anything about this problem. IMHO - the 'replace the Sim card' idea seems a little far fetched, and his system didn't have any such suggestions.

I suspect there will be a lot of 'noise' about this in the next week (the phone just hit the street, after all!), and hopefully there will be an easy fix. I love this phone, and don't want to have to give it up.

I ave used the Atrix for almost a week now and have the same issue. It is so bad that I actually have to raise my voice (almost screaming) to talk with my wife. It is on 100% of my calls.

Speakerphone has not worked very well for me.. Felt like I was screaming into it and the person still couldn't hear me.

Definitely not as good of call quality as my iPhone 4.. which is disappointing because I thought the Atrix would be better.

My girlfriend has told me that I sound muffled and she often asks me to repeat myself. Between this and the unlimited data plan fiasco I'm going to return my Atrix and wait for something else.

Just curious, but have any of the previous posters put a case or screen protector on their Atrix? I was looking at cases for mine and noticed that some of the designs looked like they would block the mic (it's that tiny slit just below the front screen). I have only heard positive feedback from everyone regarding Atrix sound quality, but I have not installed a case or screen protector yet.

I haven't heard anything like that till now. Talked to a few people, even worked from home Thursday and Friday and attended all my calls on the Atrix. Will have to keep my eye out though.

Yeah alot of screen protectors block the mic on the bottom. Thats why i haven't gotten one yet. I'm going to the Ghost Armor kiosk at my mall this week to see if there's is any better sincr i usually go with them. Because everyone has told me I sound fine on my Atrix.

I wrote the post about the problems that my wife and I had yesterday. We did *not* have screen protectors yesterday, but did get them installed. The voice quality didn't change (although I didn't even think about that possibility).

I had a long talk with another friend today while on the Atrix. He said that it did sound muffled, but it wasn't too bad. Note - I still have the noise cancellation turned off, which made a difference. With that report, I'm not in a rush to return it. I'm going to hang in there and see what they come up with.

Noise Cancellation is off, and my sound is still horrendous (New sim turned out not to work). I have another handset coming on Tuesday, but after this influx of sound issues I'm very close to returning this thing if the problems persist.
