The stock voice mail app is forcing an update and has locked me out until I update. What does this update do and can I get around the update if I want to ?

It depends on your carrier. Usually they will tell you in the notes before you download it.

Virgin mobile. I just have this screen that says important update. " This is a mandatory software update due to the age of your current version ". And it has locked me out of voice mail. I guess until I allow the update.
