Need help with VOIP and over seas calls back to the USA

Hello all, I'm looking for a way to make VOIP or wifi calls to a USA number from anywhere over seas. I know my droid incredible wont have CDMA service over seas. Currently I'm in the US Navy and am looking for a way to communicate with my wife when I pull into port. I was using Fring but now that they have disabled Skype access I'm kind of stuck as the Skype app will only work over 3g and CDMA is a no go over in Europe. Anyone have any ideas for me? Thanks.

Chris

If you only want text communication, any of the other add-ons in Fring should work, Live Messenger for example. If you want voice, I'm fairly certain you'll need some kind of 3G connection, as GSM does not provide the necessary bandwidth. In any case, doing stuff like this outside of your own country is bound to get very expensive, very fast.

Can you explain a bit more exactly what you have in mind?

First and foremost, thank you for helping keep our country safe!

I may have a solution to your lack of skype access issue. This will require an hour or more of initial setup, but should solve your lack of CDMA issue: you can create a VOIP number which would give you unlimited calls to and from US numbers. The link is here:
https://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0Ae8glDUXDsh9ZGR2eG43cjRfMzNkOTM4ZjNjeA&hl=en
(you'll want SIPSorcery integration with SIPGate or with ipkall, the 8th/9th sections)

As part of the process, you'll have to setup a dial plan. Fortunately you can find many good dial plans at this link:
google-voice-sipsorcery-dialplans - Project Hosting on Google Code

Once you've setup your VOIP account, you just need to install and configure a voip/sip program on your phone. I recommend sipgate or linphone, but there are many others out there. You're now all set in terms of configurations. To make/receive calls, you'll just need a place with wifi (since you mentioned CDMA wasn't available)...so if there's a restaurant/pub/cafe near port with wifi you're all set!

Thanks for all of this, but I guess i'm not savvy enough to get this all hooked up and working. In fact I really have no idea how to make any of this work. I signed up for a sipsorcery account and a Ipkall account and already have a google voice account, but I just cant figure out how to get them all hooked together.

Chris- the whole process may seem overwhelming, but fortunately it's just lots of steps...not too much difficult parts. give it a shot; if you run into any problems you can PM me and I can try to guide you through those parts

Thanks again, I got one of my friends to help me out with the setup. I'm using IPKall, SIPSorcery, Google Voice and SIPDROID on my phone. I was getting stuck with SIPSorcery and not knowing I had to put in a dialing plan or even what it was. So I'm all set now, got a call going out with airplane mode on while wifi was on and it worked pretty well. it took a while to get the call back but thats a small price to pay for free international calling.
