Volume Buttons for Media Control?

My previous phone (HTC One) was able to control applications like Spotify with the volume buttons on the side of the phone even when the phone was locked. I can't for the life of me figure out a way to convince this device to do anything other than volume control with the volume rocker. I'd just like to use the volume control with short clicks, but if I do a long press it doesn't something else (this may have been a feature of Cyanogen that I was using previously?).

I'd like to use a Long hold on up and down to Next Track / Previous Track for Spotify. Right now if I do this, instead it just blows out my ear drums by maxing the volume quickly. Are there apps that allow me to customize what the volume rocker does in specific states?

Also, does this phone not intelligently recognize the difference between headphones being plugged in vs plugging it into an Auxillary jack? That was something else that worked well on my One as well.

AT&T having this phone locked down is starting to frustrate me!

If you have stock headphones...

Double press the pause button and you'll flick to the next song 🙌

Sadly, that won't do what I'm wanting. I primarily want this use for in the car so I don't have to look at my darn phone to change songs when using the Aux port on the stereo. I do this daily, and its just dangerous to look down and try to find the Skip Track button while I'm driving.

Have you hand control on the steering wheel?

I wouldn't even attempt to skip songs using the Volume keys on my phone whilst driving...

If I were you I'd set my play list the night before and your all set! 😎

I do have hand control, but it doesn't work for things plugged into the Auxiliary port to my knowledge. I guess I'm not sure if I've even tried before though. I'll give that a try later. I have no fears of switching the song using the buttons on the side of my phone. I just keep it in the cup holder and reach down. The volume is always in the same place and I get it by feel. No looking away... and honestly how many people drive with both hands on the steering wheel all the time anyways. :p

I tried that app deeb215 and got pretty excited about it honestly once I read the description the other day, but sadly it doesn't seem to work for Spotify (at least not yet). Its made to work with other apps directly and it just MIGHT work for different ones by chance, but no luck for me.

try Frinky Music Controller on Google Play
I always wanted to have an app which controls music with volume keys but i could not find any which does it smoothly. So I developed my own :p . My app Frinky Music Controller on GOOGLE PLAY controls music with volume keys and smartly controls music volume. It supports more 200 music players and Spotify. It works on both rooted and non-rooted phones.
Some features of the app are :
Next Song -- press volume UP key single time to play next song.
Previous Song -- use volume DOWN key to play previous song.
Control Volume -- when we want to control music volume , most of the time we press volume key more than once (next time when you adjust volume , feel it) . So the app uses this tendency of users as a function to control music volume i.e press volume key more than once to adjust volume.
Stop song -- Oh! you play music in your class in absence of professor here comes the professor .... turn off the music quickly by UP+UP+DOWN+DOWN key action (it takes less time than muting the volume and unlocking the screen :D .
Sleep Timer : Single sleep timer for all your music apps.
Manually control app's service : well to understand this feature you will have to download the app.
It consumes very less amount of ram.
