Volume control disabled? since marshmallow update.

No volume control since marshmallow update. Instead rocker bar puts coloured highlighting around various things. If I'm in a program it puts me back a page. This is my first smartphone so I don't have all the lingo. Need help in Dummies version. My phone's a Moto X Play
