Volume issue on the LG Optimus F3

Hi all,
I've just got a new Virgin Mobile LG Optimus F3 and I've been setting it up all afternoon, and I'm very happy aside from one problem - the volume. When watching videos or listening to music, or trying to adjust the notification and ringtone volumes, neither the volume rocker nor the sliders in the settings app have any effect, and the volume remains at full. The sliders change - the sound doesn't.
Any ideas?

EDIT: A further development; the phone also doesn't recognise headphones. When I plug them in it keeps blasting out of the phone speakers.

I wonder if, by chance, you have a defective unit or if there are unapplied software updates.

Thanks for responding! False alarm though... I should have known to try the old O.F.F.O.N. test before seeking outside help. That solved it.
