Voodoo is up!

namebrandon,

is CWM recovery compatible with voodoo? can we still flash roms over this ext4 kernel?

the only partition that's ext4 is /data. CWM is not compatible with ext4, so doing anything that touches /data will fail. If the process to flash your partircular ROM doesn't touch /data, then you're fine.

Keep in mind you cannot perform full nandroid backups or restores now.

thx, namebrandon!

do you know if it's safe to install jt's super clean rom after voodoo ?

also - just so i have this right - every time i want to use CWM or try a different kernel, i have to do the disable_lagfix and reboot to revert back to rfs ?

OK if you already have voodoo installed V0.1 and want to update to V0.2 then here we go....

Get root explorer and navigate to the sdcard and go into voodoo. Once in voodoo hit menu> new folder. Label it " disable_lagfix " no quotes .
Exit out of root explorer.
Then power off the phone and turn it back on. It will automatically detect the lagfix disable and well you guess it, it will disable it.
Then once the phone boots up go back to your root explorer and delete the disable lagfix folder you just created. Now you can install the newer version of voodoo .02 flash it over cwm. Sit back and wait. Be patient thru the whole thing it will work.

Thank you for this, my "friend" said it worked perfectly and he said he owes you a beer...

I'd check with JT on that, I don't know off hand.. I rarely flash ROM's.

Yes, if you want to use any kernel besides voodoo, you need to uninstall voodoo first.

So once the roms start taking off(assuming this will happen like the D1), will the kernals most likely have voodoo installed? Will you have to remove voodoo to perform a wipe and install a new rom? Would be fine if you could install without a data wipe but from my D1 days, this seems to cause issues with new roms.

Hmmm...

Is everyone really seeing a big improvement with this? I could care less about my quadrant score but I do see some of the lag that happens from time to time.

Thanks,

Adiliyo can you use Odin to go back to stock?

yes and no. my system shows 0.0B free after using odin, then CW to flash a stock nandroid

(just using odin puts me into a FC loop)

then after a wipe through the privacy settings, i can get it to show 1.25GB free, but the phone can't seem to access it.

i'm sure there is a way to fix it, but i don't have the patience, a new phone is a faster solution for me :p

I have noticed a nice improvement. I noticed that there is minimal delay when loading apps, the puzzle piece unlock seems to have no hang up, although it was never a big problem before, but still noticeable. Overall the device feels just a bit snappier. I am pleased with it.

For those who are unsure how to install this patch, here's how I installed it.

** make sure you uninstall the lag fix before attempting this update **

-download the voodoo_kernel_0.2 file
-connect Fascinate to computer
-mount phone
-create a new folder labeled "Voodoo" on the sd card - place the voodoo_kernel_0.2 zip file in the Voodoo folder you created - leave it as a zip file - do not extract it.
-reboot into recovery
-when in recovery choose the "install zip from sdcard" option
-navigate to the Voodoo folder and click on the zip file
-the file will extract itself and you will go back to recovery
-click on "reboot system now"

sit back and listen to that sexy robot work her magic.

I hope this helps.

I didn't have the option to "install zip from sdcard". I had "apply sdcard:update.zip" I selected that and got the following:

-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package
Opening update package
verifying update package

E:failed to open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory)
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.

Since I have done this my phone has been moving just fine...but now my market downloads hang. They never start. I have left them go for 15-20 minutes and they never download. I have done a battery pull...and am debating on removing this lag fix and starting fresh... Does anyone have any ideas?

I am not sure why I would apply this over the other fix if I am getting the same scores? Any reason?

This is an actual lag fix. It converts /data to ext4 and makes the filesystem reads much faster. Ryan's fix wasn't actually real, just used loop commands and copied some stuff to a folder formatted differently and wasted space. With this, you should notice it being snappier overall but with lower quadrant scores (database writes...) and you will have 700MB more free internal storgae!

that's not how it's meant to be installed.

1. you will need clockwork running on the fascinate (there's a sticky in this forum that tells you how to do that)

2. download the voodoo zip, (DON'T rename it to update.zip, as clockwork puts an update.zip on your sd card that is meant to boot into the recovery with)

3. remember where you placed the voodoo zip

4. boot into recovery (power plus both vol up + down)

5. apply the update.zip (the clockwork one) the phone will then boot into CW recovery

6. go to the apply zip from sd card (i can't remember the exact menu name, but it's something to that effect) (also, you navigate clockwork by using volume and selecting with the power button)

7. choose apply zip from sd card

8. navigate to the voodoo zip you downloaded and select it.

that should be it, the phone will boot, and the droid lady will tell you what step it's on, and then you should eventually boot into the OS.

a lot of stuff feels faster than before, like there's no delay in opening things:D

Mine is doing the same thing. It started right after I installed the new kernels with the lagfix. Everything else seems to be working correctly.

What market version are you using?

I am still using the old version, but I tried to install the newest version, but I keep getting "Installation failed."

If anyone has any ideas about how to correct this I would appreciate it.

I haven't seen this issue myself, but I wonder if appbrain would respond differently.. Perhaps you can google around for an appbrain apk.
