vpn connection keeps dropping when going from wifi to 3G

Is there a way to keep the phone logged in to a vpn connection? I need to use it for my work emails, but every time I switch from wifi to 3G, or drop the 3G signal, I have to reconnect to the vpn again. Not very practical.

I would ask the IT department if they set the vpn to drop when the ip changes on the active connection.
