VR help on Google Pixel

Looking for someone more intelligent than myself. I was given a VR headset for Christmas. It is an off brand, not daydream headset.

What can I do? I need a game controller recommendation that works with pixel. I bought MOGA pocket thinking I could control VR games with it but now I read you need the MOGA per controller for that.

Am I missing out by not having Daydream headset or is there another way I can use the daydream app with another headset and controller? Can I make something work with a controller and this headset I was given for Christmas? Trying not to hurt feelings, looking for some options.

Should be able to use it with any bluetooth controller that works outside of the VR environment. I have a beboncool controller (was like 20$ on amazon), that works well for me with my Gear VR. The Moga controller from what I've seen about them is they require the moga software to be running, which may not work with the VR.
