Yeah, I read this earlier. It would be great if Google is able to get this pushed through so that all the carriers/phones are on board/compatible. It's one of those features that is only valuable if others have it.

Not sure why this would be limited to Pixel 3 phones, unless it is just to drive sales. Not sure that would be much of an incentive, but who knows.
