VZW Says the Problem with My GNex is I am TOO CLOSE to a Tower!

Re: VZW Says the Problem with My GNex is I am TOO CLOSE to a Towe

Go into the dialer and type *#*#4636#*#* then tap "Phone information" then scroll down to "Set preferred network type."

It should say GSM/CDMA auto (PRL). If it doesn't, then click on the triangle on the right and it gives you the option to change the preferred network type. Set it to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL).

"Mobile network not available" I tried to *22899 as well, but I can't get dial tone. I'm rooted, running stock. I haven't made any app changes in possibly a few weeks.

I'm probably going to call big red in the morning.

OK, I would unroot and relock it and then call.

Try saving *22899 as a contact and dial it that way. Trying to dial *22899 manually automatically gets rejected. I would probably still relock and call big red since your phone is stuck in WCDMA.

Re: VZW Says the Problem with My GNex is I am TOO CLOSE to a Towe

Seriously, I was told that. I am 2 miles from a tower and was told that due to sectorization (whatever that means) the tower is expected to give out a signal without good building penetration in my direction and that I am too close to the tower and this causes problems with the 4G...
Hmmm.

Maybe use the Sensorly app to check the area for dead spots. It will map it for you.

Also check the Signal to Noise Ratio. It wil show on the display. If the the SNR is to high, there is too much background or echo. 2 miles should not be close enough for a bad SNR.

GSM Only is basically LTE only without Voice/1x.

I was able to get dialtone a few times and dial out with *22899 and #*#4636#*#*.
I could hear the programming, please wait message, but my phone kept disconnecting before it would finish.

Rather than screw with big red support, which probably would have been frustrating and a waste of my time, I just wiped and installed Open Kang. I was waiting for some of the other GNex roms to mature, but I've read some good stuff on AOKP and went for it.

Restored all of my apps from a titanium backup and my phone is calling in and out now. 3G is back.

My "preferred network" list is now just two options : LTE/CDMA or CDMA

I have no idea where those other options came from. My phone was on 4.0.2, I hadn't received the 4.0.4 or whatever that was rumored to be leaking out for some users. I hadn't tried installing a custom radio or phone. I hadn't tried to install anything custom on my phone in several weeks, my phone just stopped working on Thursday after the preferred network switched to GSM/WCDMA and wouldn't change back to LTE/CDMA.

tldr : installed AOKP with the franco kernel, couldn't be happier
