VZW Says the Problem with My GNex is I am TOO CLOSE to a Tower!

Re: VZW Says the Problem with My GNex is I am TOO CLOSE to a Towe

I drop voice calls when my phone switches from 4G to 3G, so yes, it really is a problem.

I have wifi in my house, but at the end of my driveway or in my backyard, I don't have wifi. Is it wrong to want to play with my phone outside?

Well, I just had another conversation with a different tech guy and he told me that the information I was given last time was wrong. The tower that is 2 miles away is not a 4G tower and the nearest 4G tower to me is 4 miles away. He said given our flat terrain, that 4G tower is expected to have a 20+ mile range and that 4 miles is not too close nor too far away for me to have such a poor 4G signal.

He put in a new trouble ticket. I will report back when I get an update.

Is it wrong to play with your phone outside? Wasn't you complaining about not having signal in the house? My phone drops from 3-4g in my apartment all the time. My data reception sucks in my apartment but I have never dropped a call. What was your reception like on your previous phone?

I can't get much of a 4G signal in my house or in my yard.

4G LTE transmits at a lower frequency than the 3G network so it should have better penetration in-building.

My previous phone was not a smart phone but I had no reception problems. The only phone I have to compare my GNex to is an iPhone, which of course isn't a 4G phone, but it has no reception problems.

Personally I have no experience with cell towers but I am in a radio maintenance career field the military. That being said, Cell towers are just radios :)

Then you're in a weak signal area. Pretty common sense.

4G LTE transmits at a lower frequency than the 3G network so it should have better penetration in-building.

And? If you're in a weak signal area, that doesn't matter.

My previous phone was not a smart phone but I had no reception problems. The only phone I have to compare my GNex to is an iPhone, which of course isn't a 4G phone, but it has no reception problems.

Unless it was a 4g phone your previous experience is irrelevant.

well, gnex girl, guess you'll have to sell your house and move further away form the tower then.

LOL! Not in this market!

Actually the VZW guy on the phone tonight was totally cool. He put in another trouble ticket for me. I just want to know what is going on here. It really doesn't make sense for me to be in what is supposed to be a great 4G area and not get a decent 4G signal. Maybe it is my GNex but this is my second one and I would rather have them troubleshoot the network before going for a third GNex.

Re: VZW Says the Problem with My GNex is I am TOO CLOSE to a Towe

I am not sure on that "too close" jib.. I have a local Wendy's that sitting in the parking lot, I can see the tower like 100 yards away and when I do speed tests, I actually see speeds over 35Mbps consistantly, one after the other after the other..

2 miles away is obviously alot farther away and should be well within the peak signal range..

Have you tried forcing your phone into LTE only? *#*#4636#*#* then phone info and Set Preferred Network.. do you see LTE Only listed there? I dont see it on my phone but I have a different device than you do..

I don't see LTE only. For Set Preferred Network Type my choices are:

WCDMA preferred
GSM only
WCDMA only
GSM auto (PRL)
CDMA auto (PRL)
CDMA only
EvDo only
GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) - this is what my phone is set to

Does this mean my phone can be used as a GSM phone since I have the option of GSM only?

I set my phone just now to GSM only and tried to make a call but it didn't work neither would data.

Then I set it to GSM auto (PRL) and it would make a call but no data. When I went to settings, about phone, status the Mobile Network Type was 1xRTT:6, the Network was Verizon Wireless, Roaming was not roaming and Mobile network state was disconnected. When I went to settings, more, mobile networks it said the preferred network mode was GSM/WCDMA.

Don't mess with those options. They are not set up properly on the nexus.

2 miles isnt really that close anyway. My girlfriend has a tower within 500 yards of her house and I get a full 4g signal. When I leave and go home (2.5miles away) I have 1 bar. sounds like to me you're on the edge.

Your phone if it is a Verizon Wireless phone, shouldn't be set for GSM. Where did you find that particular option. Because I don't see that as an option on my phone.

If you are unable to get data on your phone right now, the above might be a good indication as to why. When I look at the options available to me in mobile network settings what is available to me is LTE/CDMA, or CDMA.

I don't have it set to GSM. It is set to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) and works fine on that setting.

Go into the dialer and type *#*#4636#*#* then tap Phone information then scroll down to Set preferred network type. It should say GSM/CDMA auto (PRL). Click on the triangle and it gives you the option to change the preferred network type.

Re: VZW Says the Problem with My GNex is I am TOO CLOSE to a Towe

My Verizon phone is stuck on GSM/WCDMA (no data signal).

I've had my Verizon GNex since early December. My preferred networks mode used to show two options, I think they were LTE/CDMA or CDMA only. I always had the non-LTE mode selected as my neighborhood has zero 4G.

This afternoon, I lost my data signal and now my preferred network list is much larger,
LTE/CDMA
EvDo only
CDMA w/o EvDo
CDMA / EvDo auto
GSM / WCDMA auto
WCDMA only
GSM only
GSM/WCDMA *preferred*

I've rebooted and I'm not sure what else I can do (short of calling verizon and asking them for help)

I can't get the phone to choose one of the verizon cdma options.

My phone is stuck on GSM/WCDMA
