Vzw to kill grandfathered unlmtd data plans with 4g upgrades

yeha, the latest from Verizon is that the only way to keep unlimited data is to either a) not upgrade, b) purchase at full retail or c) buy from craigslist/ebay.

Verizon has how many customers? I think I read yesterday 93 million. if they lost 3% of that over this, (they're estimating that will be the fallout) they can live with that. they know A LOT of what we don't: what their competitors are planning. do we really believe that they would do this without knowing somehow that Sprint and the others are moving towards the same type of setup? I can't believe that they don't care that Sprint still offers unlimited data, and that potentially tons of people would bolt for Sprint, no matter how bad their coverage may be.

I think we are going to have to figure out just how important unlimited data is to us. I get to keep mine until July 2013, then it's decision time: do i keep my Tbolt, which is already a dinosaur in smartphone circles NOW, or do I pay $600.00 retail in order to keep my unlimited data? I know i need at least 10GB a month for my normal data usage. either I rachet down seriously, or get ready to pay $50 or so more a month for data. My reflex action is to say I'm keeping my Tbolt, but YOU KNOW all the dual and quad core phones out there are going to be very enticing. like I said before, goodbye netflix, goodbye NFL network, goodbye excessive youtube viewing. I'm going to enjoy the next 14 months, but it's going to FLY by. :'(

If they do a SHARE data plan of $50/month for 10GB a month...that would work for me....right now I am paying $29 for me and $29 for my son....he has the Droid 2 and uses about 2GB so the 10GB for a $50 would be a little cheaper.

Where my data usage comes from is the AUTO re-install after a flash. But, that is easy to turn off and just use WiFi.

My question is this....if we have to pay more for our data plan....what are we going to get out of it?.....better service?, timely updated/upgrades to new OS?. I want to get something for my $$$

I would be ok if they up data but drop the cost of phone and texting

defcon, very good points. what DO we get is a very good question. personally, the ONLY gripe I have with verizon is their snails pace to update their devices. I'm not sure they can give much better service, but I may be in the minority on this one, because I've have very very few issues with them service-wise or customer service wise, and i've been with them for over 8 years now. Sprint was absolutely the worst in terms of service and customer service follow up, which is why I madly/gladly dropped them in favor of verizon. I have a feeling WiFi will be my very best friend about two years from now....

My best guess is that Verizon won't cut the cost of anything . Discontinued new every two, charging a $30 fee to upgrade now doing away with unlimited data.
I'm placing my bet on the horse that says this isn't a measure to save the customer money, it's one to make more money for Verizon.

If I switched over to the $80 a month for 20 GBs would save money. On my plan I have 5 unlimited at $30 apiece. That's $150 a month just for data. I'm the biggest user in my family at about 10-12GBs a month. This is something I really need to consider. $70 less a month is big.

I have a friend working in vzw and she told me that this will only apply to the people moving from 3g to 4g, so i will keep my unlimited 4g data for a while, until they decide to remove that one too.

Actually, if you try to buy any other smartphone, you will have to pay full retail in order to keep your unlimited data plan. Your only choices are keep the phone you have, or pay full retail.

What a dream. Verizon lowering their prices will never happen.

1) They have data addicts by the short hairs. Have we all forgotten that life is enjoyable (more importanatly: survivable) with out data plans? Seriously, we're not trapped by the phone company & we're not trapped by our technology. We are only trapped by our perceived "need" for mobile data. Why is it that the "do without" option is overlooked? When my cable company upped my rates for tv, I reduced it to the least expensive package available and traded in my DVR for a basic HD box. If Verizon does the same, I will happily give them back my data plan because I can do without.
2) If they're going to offer shared, there is a potential that it will come out cheaper for those with mutiple data users on a family plan. My dad and I are the only data users on the family plan and are currently paying $30/month each. If they offer a plan that we can share that costs less then $60/month we come out ahead.
Remember, it is YOUR almighty dollar that they want, and you have a choice. The clearest message that we the consumers can send to them is to say "no". Obviously, if someone truly needs the data plan, they will find a way to make it work. The reason that this sort of thing continues to happen is because they know they can get away with it. We keep paying. We whine and moan the whole damn time, but we still pay. STOP PAYING, ENJOY living without data, and force them to entice us back with reasonable rates.
I'll hop off my soap box now...

JVH,

I agree, it will be rough to give up my data now that I've had it for a year, but I would consider it if the prices are too high.

Well as for now I have an upgrade avilable and was waiting for a phone that I liked/wanted to come out but if it mean giving up my Unlimited plan. Looks as if my Tbolt will be with my a while longer or unless I decide to pay cash or...... There so called shared plan could really benefit me. but I will not pay more for less. I would rather go back to basic or switch carriers. I will not pay more money than 60.00 for 2 data lines and come out with less than 8-10GB per month. For me to loose my unlimited it would have to be less than 60 to make more realistic with the above limits

TB IS 4G. I Currently have unlimited databon my LTE/4G device. If I decide to replace it with another VZ 4G Device it will not be an upgrade. Article states new rates for those upgrading. Shouldn't that mean that I keep my current unlimited data?

It is an upgrade because you are changing phones with signing a new contract.....unless you buy outright and not upgrade

I highly recommend emailing Verizon. Don't just talk....do something about it! From your account email them.... I did. We need to band together.....
