It says you get a $50 gift card with avtivation. It doesn't say you need to activate to get the $79.88 price. It is on contract, hence the "with activation" in the ad. I also assume 8 GB but who knows.
So you figure out how much the 2 year contract is going to cost you, and then what you could get without a contract and the difference is what you are really paying for the phone. I bet you would be way ahead buying the phone directly from Google Play, and getting a no contract T mobile account.
Is the T-Mobile etf $200? If so, wouldn't u be getting the phone for $279 if u cancel ur contract? Am I missing something?

First, that's a bit of work to save not much money.
Second, the etf is one thing, but there is also a payout for the remainder of the price of the phone (I believe)
So if you buy a subsidized Galaxy note 2 for $200, you pay the etf plus the remaining cost of your subsidized phone.
Pretty sure that means you pay: etf + (cost of phone - (payments made on phone - interest paid so far))
So you buy for 200, they subsidize 400, you pay monthly fee + $2/mo interest. You terminate, so you pay the remaining balance on the 400, plus the etf
