Want to get a Nexus But Data Dropping Reports are a Little Scary

I went to the verizon store today because my thunderbolt broke. Was pretty settled on getting a Nexus. The rep at the store told me to get a razr maxx instead. He said people came in droves because of issues on the Nexus.

I didn't end up getting the razr because I wanted to go back home and do some research - and 'lo behold he was right. There are a huge amount of complaints about the data drop problem, pages upon pages of complaints from different people. I honestly have not seen so many complaints about a new phone before, seems a little odd to me.

Are these just growing pains for a brand new phone with a brand new OS on it? Has there been any word from Google or Samsung about a fix? I would like to wait it out and see if it ever gets fixed, but with a broken phone I need to get something soon, like tonight or tomorrow.

The complains on the issue are no more imo than any other new phone that comes out. Also I have never had those issues. Oh and of course they would tell you to get the Razr Max it's a new phone so that is what they will push on you.

Keep in mind, There verizon employees have incentive to sell that crappy.

Listen to the people before you make that decision.

Re: Want to get a Nexus But Data Dropping Reports are a Little Sc

The issues have nothing to do with the new OS and everything to do with the weird authentication system that Verizon uses for their 4G phones. You'd have the same issue on the RAZR.

Go with your gut and get what you want. Don't listen to the rep that's been ordered to upsell you a RAZR.

Actually.... I got the Razr Maxx and have better luck with radios. Hope its a software fix for the Nexus. The nexus is still a sexy phone.

I will admit I miss ics.

I had the GNex and I still have it. Currently using the razor maxx and the gnex. The maxx last about 6hrs longer then the GNex on a daily basis. The signal strength is stronger on the razr. There is more handoff problems with the GNex then the razr. I love the look and feel of the GNex but the razr performs better as a phone.

the 4g data connection on my galaxy nexus has been perfect, even in locations where my Bionic falls down to 3g or has no connection at all. no other problems with the nexus either, i am very happy with it.

Verizon reps don't care what 4g phone you buy as long as its 4g. They get paid the same amount. But if you return the device or exchange it they lose money. Because of this they will push phones with the least issues and complaints. That's why this rep pushed the max, not because it's new lol.

I LOVE my nexus. It is the best phone ive ever had and I've had a bunch of phones. My one gripe is the data. The issue seems to be going from 4g to 3G. I lose data for 10 min before it returns. Sometimes it doesn't come back till I reboot. Because of this I am forced into leaving the phone on 3G. If you are always in a 4g area then you are fine. Or if you don't drive and stream music then but go from 4g to 3G you might not notice the data drop.

Re: Want to get a Nexus But Data Dropping Reports are a Little Sc

The problem is the Verizon 4g network. Still lose the network connection on my Thunderbolt. And hearing about it on the newer phones keeps me from paying for a new phone that still won't work well with 4g.

Re: Want to get a Nexus But Data Dropping Reports are a Little Sc

I haven't had the data problems. I'm coming from an Incredible 1. I also have a better phone signal. My apartment gets a crappy signal. I would drop calls and data on my Incredible that I don't with my Nexus. I will sometimes slip between 3G and 4G but I think that has more to do with my apartment because it doesn't happen when I'm out and about. I'm in KC area and we have very good 4G coverage.

i still lose signal in 3g only mode

Re: Want to get a Nexus But Data Dropping Reports are a Little Sc

I went through 3 thunderbolts and a bionic. All would lose data(my wife's Tbolt has no issue at all with signal go figure lol). The bionic was a solid phone for me until the .893 update then it went to crap. I was switched out to a GNEX. While the signal meter is brutally honest; I have not had an issue with dropped data at all.

Re: Want to get a Nexus But Data Dropping Reports are a Little Sc

I have both phones and the GN is now sitting in the drawer as the RAZR MAXX just works better. Hopefully after some updates the GN will perform as advertised but until then the RAZR MAXX is a better phone imo.

I think you should skip the Nexus. You'll be awed by it's screen & ICS, but you will get quite frustrated with the hardware.

The Maxx will get ICS soon enough.

please by all means explain. I think comments like this stem from the recent threads were people were over reacting and saying dumb things like the lte nexus isnt supported by google.

Re: Want to get a Nexus But Data Dropping Reports are a Little Sc

I've had the phone since day one. I've had about 4 or 5 data drops in 6 weeks. I can live with it. VZ and Google are taking their sweet time w/the OTA update, but I think the vast majority of these phones work well.
