I have been using the Android Auto App for a few months now and I like the simplistic layout and easy access to things that I need to use while on the road.

The app, by default, leaves the screen on while you're driving, my drives are usually a from a few minutes to an hour and then the screen turns off.
When recently switching back to the default theme on my Samsung Galaxy s8 plus, which made the screens and backgrounds more white. I was immediately able to see burn-in on my screen from the top of the app with the microphone to the right and the menu button to the left and then the navigation buttons across the bottom of the screen.
The cards are always moving and changing and I don't see any ill effects from that, however these other stationary items are always in the same place.
I was not aware that burn in was still a problem with these newer displays but I guess it definitely is.
So basically with regular use of this app, it has damaged my screen.

I just really wanted to spread the word in case anyone was using this app in the same way to keep them from damaging their phone also!

Burn-in is always going to be a problem. (If you ever see a much-used CRT display from the 70s or 80s, you'll see it.) The only "solution", if you want the screen to stay on (you can turn it off manually) is to keep the brightness down to 20% or less (which means keeping the phone out of sunlight, or you won't see anything on the screen).

There hasn't been any breakthrough on OLED life span, especially blue subpixels. Probably never will. So, burn-in will always be an issue until new display technology replaces it.
