This mistake is costing me a lot of frustration and wasted time.

Apparently, Verizon Wireless today is having some kind of customer service database problems for the past two hours and basically can't do anything.

Timely that I would decide this morning to try and set up a password for my SIM card. I thought the phone was asking me to enter (read: create) the password for the SIM card, but nope... it already has a default password, and was asking me to enter that. I entered (read: tried to create) a password twice, and BAM... locked out of my phone. The only way to unlock the phone now is to enter a PUK code, which Verizon does not give you when you buy your phone.

Since the phone is locked, I have no way to call Verizon Support. I went down to the retail store instead, and found out there is nothing they can do until their systems are back up... with NO ETA after an hour of being down. So, I had to leave my phone with them and will have to go back later to pick it up once they fix the issue.

Thanks for the heads up. Sucks it had to happen to you but reporting it here will surely teach your fellow TB users a valuable lesson.

Yes they do....the default password is 1111

I asked when I bought the phone...he had to look it up, but that is what he told me.

I haven't locked my sim FYI, so I do NOT vouch for the validity of that default password...I'm JUST telling you what he looked up when I asked for the default password, which I did because I read through the manual before the phone launched and read about locking the SIM.

YMMV

They might give you the SIM code if you ask for it... but the PUK code is not the same... it's a code to UNLOCK the SIM if you accidentally screw up entering the SIM code. The rep told me they don't give out the PUK codes... they seemed kind of clueless about SIM cards though, maybe since Verizon has not used them for very long?

Wow that's crazy that 2 attempts and your locked out. Good luck and I hope this isn't a reoccurring theme for people.

I specifically asked for the PUK code. He read me the FAQ from his computer monitor about the PUK code, and that you needed to enter it first, then change it to your own unique code. He then told me that the default PUK password was 1111.

He didn't know immediately what I was talking about, so he researched it. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!! :-*

Yeah, well he was wrong, because the PUK code is a minimum of 8 characters. Not surprising, the Verizon people didn't know much about it at my store, either.

I did the same thing to my first GSM phone in 2003. PUK'd it twice in one month fooling around. If you enter the PUK wrong too many times it disables your SIM and you have to go get a new one. I did that trick too.

I called VZW for the PUK and they supplied it. But this was a long time ago.

You can find your PUK code at My Verizon.

Once you log in, click HTC ThunderBolt (should be under your phone number). There will be a link that says Personal Unblocking Key. Click that and you'll get the PUK.

Yep. Clicking HTC Thunderbolt link under your phone number will take you to your PUK and Default Pin (which is the 1111)

thank you so much for this!! i literally was about to cry. i just got my phone today and acidentally locked the sim pin and could not figure out how to fix it i had one try left n saw this so i did what you said and it worked!!

I'm completely lost and I hope somebody can steer me in the right direction. I entered my PUK, then I was asked to enter my PIN, after I did that it said "unlocking SIM card..." but then was promptly asked to confirm PIN again. What is going on with my phone?????? Any advise would be helpful.

Nice Information, good to know just in case..

I would guess this is giving you a option to change your password because if you need the PUK meant you inputted the wrong password that means you may have forgot it.

I also did that, less then a week after I got my thunderbolt. I used up all of my retries and eventually had to go to Verizon.

My Verizon did the trick! Log in and click on the name of your phone! Created an account just to say Thanks @Deinonychus

Deinonychus....you rock. Thanks for saving me lots of time and having more knowledge that most Verizon sales reps.

I created an account just to say THANK YOU!!!!! I panicked and tried all 1s and 2 or 3 others. Till I saw to log onto MyVerizon, and low and behold, after clicking on my phone, I looked down, there it was, unlock SIM. Thank you guys soooooo much. I won't play with my phone again like that, that's for sure!!!

PUK code for my razormaxx is 8 digits so no combination of 1111 works. I agree that this is very frustrating! and happens at night when nothing is open!! The OS just updated and of course things are now different... dinking around led me to the settings for the sim which led to the lockout as noted below... can't believe how user unfriendly these things can be. Guess the verizon store is the only option!

Ok, guess I should have read further! lol, my verizon it is!!

All you need to do (for a temporary solution) is go to a Verizon store, tell them what happened, SHOW THEM IF THEY ARE TOO DUMB TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING, and then they will give you a new card. Hopefully you do not lose all your files stored on your SIM card, but that option worked for me and prevented me the trouble of worrying about some stupid SIM card PUK code. The code should be more than 4 numbers too, so I don't think "1111" is the right answer for this situation.
That one was free. I'll be here all day
