So here is my 24 hour report... I think that 24 hours is not enough to get a full feel for a device, so I will try to avoid jumping to any conclusions.
A few things to know about me;
- I like new technology but I usually don't rush into it.
- I use the HTC One M8 and love it.
- I am very tech savvy.
- I have 12 watches, 10 of which are "luxury", two of which are not (Casio G Aviation Concept and Citizen Skyhawk Atomic).
The Moto 360 2015 was purchased from Best Buy - 46mm, brown band, steel body. The body of the watch itself is somewhat unremarkable, It is clean and well made, though the perfect round shape and lack of bezel markings immediately identifies it as a smart watch.
The band is supple, but quite frankly, compared to high end timepieces with leather bands, it is cheap. It is this cheapness that makes it comfortable, though, as it does not need to be "broken in" like thicker, high quality leather.
The 46mm seems perfect to me. If it were any smaller I would miss the screen space - any larger and it would look silly. The way the lugs and body sit, it is very - very comfortable to wear on the wrist. I really like that the lugs are standard 22mm, so the band can be replaced with standard straps or bracelets. I know I will do this in the future.
The watch came at about 50% charge, and it synced immediately to my phone. All software updated perfectly, although some existing apps did not make their way over to the watch until I performed a manual "resync of apps" on the Android Wear app on my phone. Make sure to do this!
I really like the customization of the features. I set the watch to show the time in ambient mode, but I turned off the motion detection so that the screen does not turn on fully without my wanting it to. I also really like the theater mode (hit the button 2x to turn screen and notifications off - hit it again to turn it back on).
Verbal commands work great...at dinner I asked what was "siracha" and some other dishes and they came up instantly. I tried the navigation which seemed to work fine, but I will have to figure out if I will use it more regularly in my travels.
I detect no pauses or delays in operation. Everything seems smooth, though I have seen some flaky things periodically - the watch seemed disconnected for a few seconds when I looked once, for example. I will keep an eye on other things that I thought I saw but it might have been user error.
One last comment on this initial 24 hour report. I decided to play with the different watch faces, including Watchmaker premium. I figured since I am not wearing my Breitling or Ball watches, I might as well see them on my smartwatch. I also downloaded Fortis and Tag models. My conclusion, however, is that they just don't look like the real thing. One could argue that it is fun to "try out" these watch faces before investing in the real thing, but the functionality did not always compare correctly to the real world. One exception was the Breitling 24 hour Military Avenger, which does give the right feel of the watch and what it is like to use a 24 hour face.
My conclusion was to not try to make this computer watch make believe to be analog. I may change my mind, but for now I am embracing digital / computer / technology faces.
Charging on the stand works great and seems quick, and the ability to use it as a traveling clock system seems attractive. Now I have to go on some trips (starting this week) to see how it travels.
FYI, as a watch snob, I will wear this watch during the day (meetings, etc.) and then at night will change into a mechanical watch (dinner meetings, parties, etc.).
There is a lot of nitty gritty operations to learn and master!
