Ways to get the most charge out of the new nexus 7

I got my nexus 7 and have been loving it to death, but I want to get the most battery out of it. I was using it last night and it went from fully charged to 83% in around an hour. this was just browsing the internet with screen brightness almost all the way off. what gives?
I have widgets: flipboard, google now, google+, and gmail on my home screen.
What are some things to turn off and keep turned off for the most part to fully maximize battery power? I should state that I like being able to use google now, so I guess one of the seemingly two gps options this thing has should be in use.
