Weak WiFi signal - anyone else have problems?

I'm wondering if something is wrong with my phone. I've had it for over 2 months now and since day one the WiFi signal had seemed weak. I realize it could just be how the software presents the signal strength, but it seems odd that when I'm only 5 ft away from the router, with a clear line of sight, I get only one or two bars on 5Ghz . Even on 2.4 Ghz from the same distance I don't get full bars. I compared to my wife's GS5 and her phone has full bars on both.

Anyone else have problems like this? Do you think I should get my phone checked?

Friends who are also neighbours allow me to use their wifi....it's useful for updates that require you to use it. The signal is weak but no worse on the G3 than with my Lumia 1020 or Nexus 5. I once tried a couple of wifi boosting apps but they didn't seem to make any practical difference that I could notice. But in your circumstances, i.e. close to the router, that might be worth trying first?

Also, have you checked B. Diddy's wifi guide? It must be world-famous by now. Beings from other worlds probably use it to fix THEIR wifi problems. Anyway, it's the first go-to:

I'm about 10 feet from my access point right now, and am showing full bars on WiFi. With weaker signals, it seems to be about the same as my SG3.
