Weird icon in notification bar

I have this weird notification icon in my notification bar. It is a box with a <\> in it? Can I disable it without messing anything up? I looked it up and apparently it is device managment application.

I went through my phone and cleared the cache in some of my apps and it made it disappear. I don't know how long it will stay gone....

Good point. You may want to go to Settings/System Updates/HTC software update and see if there's an update waiting for you.

The only option I have is AT&T system updates and that says I don't have an update. ??? Where else would I check?

The icon is a notification that is letting you know that Device Manager is starting. The Device Manager is a part of Android that assist you in finding your phone if it is lost or stolen.
